Inleiding
Voormalige DIRECTEURSWONING, gebouwd in 1907-1909 naar ontwerp van F.W.M. Poggenbeek in de stijl van het Rationalisme. Een ijzeren HEKJE als erfscheiding. Langs de Van Oldenbarneveldtweg staan zes monumentale, vrijstaande villa's ten behoeve van de directeur, de adjunct-directeur en artsen van het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis Duin en Bosch. Deze villa's, in dezelfde stijl opgetrokken en enige zelfs identiek, bevinden zich aan de uiterste rand van het oorspronkelijke ziekenhuisterrein. De woning van de geneesheer-directeur op nummer 40 bevindt zich op de kruising met de Zeeweg, tegenover de dokterswoning op nummer 53. Beide woningen liggen op een verhoging en vormen zo een monumentale entree naar de Van Oldenbarneveldtweg waar zich de overige artsenwoningen bevinden. De villa heeft een kantoorfunctie gekregen.
Omschrijving
Op een samengestelde plattegrond in kruisverband opgetrokken, tweelagige, woning onder met rode bouletpannen gedekte (afgeplatte) overkragende zadeldaken. De dakkapellen met daarin vierkante vierruits vensters hebben eveneens zadeldaken met dezelfde dekking. De vensters zijn overwegend T-vensters met achtruits bovenlichten, op de begane grond voorzien van opgeklampte luiken.
De zuidoostelijke langsgevel heeft een middenrisaliet waartegen een driezijdige erker met een gemetselde balustrade rond het dakterras erboven. Rechts daarvan bevindt zich een houten serre onder een plat dak, op een gemetselde onderbouw, met vier- en zesruits bovenlichten. De erker heeft drie keer het standaard venster, dat zich ook bevindt op de begane grond links en op de verdieping links en rechts. De balkondeuren hebben een tienruits bovenlicht, de smalle ramen aan weerszijden vierruits bovenlichten. In de topgevel van de middenrisaliet bevindt zich direct onder het beschot een stolpraam.
De noordoostelijke zijgevel, onder een afgeplat zadeldak, heeft op de verdieping en de begane grond twee vensters van het standaardtype en op de zolder twee kleinere schuifvensters met zesruits roedenverdeling.
De asymmetrische noordwestgevel wordt gekenmerkt door een lager doorlopend dakschild boven de rechter gevelhelft en een eenlaagse uitbouw ter rechterzijde. Het lage rechter geveldeel heeft twee schuifvensters met zesruits bovenlicht en rechts hiervan een klein venster. Het middendeel, onder de steekkap heeft de achterdeur, tussen twee kleine vensters, onder een vlakke luifel en doorlopend bovenlicht. Op de verdieping bevindt zich een standaardvenster en daarboven op de zolder een klein venster. Naast de voordeur zijn twee kleine vensters geplaatst met daarboven een groot en een iets kleiner kruiskozijn. De kruiskozijnen verspringen in hoogte ten opzichte van de andere vensters. Links van het middendeel bevindt zich op de begane grond en op de verdieping een standaardvenster. De zuidwestelijke zijgevel heeft bovenin de uitbouw een klein venster en onder de hoge kap op de begane grond en op de verdieping een paar schuifvensters met zesruits bovenlichten. Op de zolderverdieping bevinden zich drie kleinere, gekoppelde kozijnen met boven het middelste een vierruits bovenlicht.
Waardering
De voormalige woning van de geneesheer-directeur uit 1907-1909 is van algemeen belang als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het ziekenhuiscomplex Duin en Bosch. Description

The southeastern long side gable has a central projecting section against which stands a three-sided bay with a masonry balustrade around the roof terrace above. The bay has three times the standard window, which is also found on the ground floor to the left and on the first floor to the left and right. The balcony doors have a ten-pane fanlight, the narrow windows on either side have four-pane fanlights.
