Inleiding
Voormalige DOKTERSWONING, gebouwd in het eerste kwart van de 20ste eeuw (vermoedelijk 1912 of 1914-1917) ten behoeve van een der artsen van de psychiatrische inrichting Duin en Bosch. De vermoedelijk door F.W.M. Poggenbeek ontworpen villa is opgetrokken in de stijl van het Rationalisme. Langs de Van Oldenbarneveldtweg staan zes monumentale, vrijstaande villa's ten behoeve van de directeur, de adjunctdirecteur en artsen van het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis Duin en Bosch. Deze villa's, in dezelfde stijl opgetrokken en enige zelfs identiek, bevinden zich aan de uiterste rand van het oorspronkelijke ziekenhuisterrein. De dokterswoning op nummer 53 bevindt zich op de kruising met de Zeeweg, tegenover de woning van de directeur op nummer 40. Beide woningen liggen op een verhoging en vormen zo een monumentale entree naar de Van Oldenbarneveldtweg waar zich de overige artsenwoningen bevinden.
Omschrijving
Op een samengestelde plattegrond in grauw, bakstenen halfsteens verband opgetrokken tweelaagse woning onder met rode holle pannen gedekte (afgewolfde) overkragende zadeldaken. In de kap bevinden zich dakkapellen met vlakke daken en vierruits ramen. De woning heeft een serre-uitbouw tegen de rechterzijgevel en aan de achterzijde een uitbouw van één bouwlaag met plat dak. Het basisvenstertype is een (gekoppeld) schuifraam met zesruits bovenlicht, met luiken op de begane grond. De voorgevel (W) heeft rechts een verhoogde hoekrisaliet met op de begane grond en op de verdieping gekoppelde zesruits ramen en in de topgevel drie kleine vierruits ramen met een doorlopende lekdorpel. De voordeur met een eenvoudig sierrooster heeft het bovenlicht boven de vlakke, door stangen gedragen luifel. Naast de voordeur bevindt zich een schuifraam met zesruits bovenlicht en boven de deur een paar kleine gekoppelde ramen met tweeruits bovenlicht. Op de verdieping is links een schuifraam met zesruits bovenlicht geplaatst. De zuidelijke zijgevel heeft over bijna de hele lengte een houten, op een gemetselde plint geplaatste serre met zes- en achtruits valramen in de bovenlichten en middenvoor openslaande tuindeuren. Twee paar deuren naar het balkon hebben zesruits bovenlichten. In de kap bevinden zich twee dakkapellen met vierruits ramen. De achtergevel (O) is onder het zadeldak boven de linker gevelhelft gelijk aan de voorgevel met dien verstande dat het onderste kozijn uitgevoerd was als deurkozijn en de flankerende luiken doorlopen tot de grond. Naast de deur bevindt zich een kruisvenster. Hierboven bevindt zich een gekoppeld kozijn. In de uitbouw bevindt zich een eenvoudig kozijn. De noordelijke zijgevel, onder het afgewolfde zadeldak, heeft drie kleine gekoppelde vierruits vensters met daarboven een hoog venster in drieën met staande zesruits bovenlichten. Verder bevinden zich in de asymmetrische gevel, op de begane grond twee kleine vensters en op de verdieping één. Links is een deur met bovenlicht, overhoeks geplaatst ten opzichte van de deur in de uitbouw.
Het INTERIEUR heeft nog de oorspronkelijke indeling.
Waardering

On a complex ground plan, a two-storey residence constructed in grey brickwork, half-bond, with hipped roofs covered with red hollow tiles and overhanging. In the roof are roof dormers with flat roofs and four-pane windows. The residence has a conservatory extension against the right-hand side wall and at the rear an extension of one storey with a flat roof. The basic window type is a (coupled) sash window with six-pane fanlight, with shutters on the ground floor. The front facade (W) has on the right a raised corner projection with coupled six-pane windows on the ground floor and on the first floor and in the top gable three small four-pane windows with a continuous drip moulding. The front door with a simple ornamental grille has a fanlight above the flat awning supported by rods. Next to the front door is a sash window with six-pane fanlight and above the door a pair of small coupled windows with two-pane fanlight. On the first floor on the left is a sash window with six-pane fanlight. The southern side wall has along almost its entire length a wooden conservatory set on a brick plinth with six- and eight-pane casement windows in the fanlights and in the middle opening garden doors. Two pairs of doors to the balcony have six-pane fanlights. In the roof are two roof dormers with four-pane windows. The rear facade (E) under the gabled roof above the left half of the gable is identical to the front facade except that the lower window frame was executed as a door frame and the flanking shutters extend to the ground. Next to the door is a cross window. Above this is a coupled window frame. In the extension is a simple window frame. The northern side wall, under the overhanging gabled roof, has three small coupled four-pane windows with above them a tall window divided into three with standing six-pane fanlights. Furthermore, in the asymmetrical gable, there are on the ground floor two small windows and on the first floor one. On the left is a door with fanlight, set diagonally with respect to the door in the extension.
