Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former DOCTOR'S RESIDENCE, built in the first quarter of the 20th century (presumably 1912 or 1914-1917) for one of the doctors of the psychiatric institution Duin en Bosch. The design in the Rationalism style is by F.W.M. Poggenbeek. Along the Van Oldenbarneveldtweg stand six monumental villas for the director, the assistant director and doctors of the psychiatric hospital Duin en Bosch. These villas, built in the same style and some even identical, are located at the extreme edge of the original hospital grounds. The doctor's residence at number 38 is virtually identical to the previously built doctors' residences at numbers 36 and 34.
Description
A dwelling with a composite floor plan, constructed in grey brick with Flemish bond half-brick coursing, two storeys high, under hipped roofs with red clay tile covering (half-hipped), with overhanging eaves. In the roof are roof dormers with flat roofs and four-pane windows. The dwelling has a conservatory extension against the left side gable and a terrace above the ground-floor extension at the rear. The basic window type is two coupled sash windows with six-pane fanlights, with shutters on the ground floor. The front facade (E) has in the projecting left gable section both on the ground floor and on the first floor coupled windows, and at the top three small attic windows with a continuous drip moulding, the central window with a four-pane fanlight. Above the three windows are, in contrast to the stretches elsewhere on the facade, concrete lintels. The front door with a simple ornamental grille has a fanlight above a flat, rod-supported canopy. Next to the front door is a sash window with eight-pane fanlight and above the door a pair of coupled, small windows. The southern side gable has on the ground floor a sash window and on the first floor a coupled sash window and in the wooden conservatory, placed on a masonry plinth on the right, four- and six-pane casement windows in the fanlight and opening garden doors. The doors to the balcony have three-pane fanlights. On either side of the central chimney is a roof dormer with six-pane window. The right half of the rear facade (W) is the same as the left half of the front facade with the difference that in the lower window frame a door and a panel are placed. In the middle is a window with eight-pane fanlight. A glass door gives access to the terrace. To the right of this door is a sash window. In the extension is a simple glass door to the garden.
The northern side gable, under the half-hipped saddle roof, has an external staircase with landing to a door situated above ground level and asymmetrically placed windows, including one of the basic type and a coupled window.
Valuation
The former doctor's residence from the first quarter of the 20th century is of general interest as a historical-functional component of the hospital complex Duin en Bosch. By virtue of its architectural design in the Rationalism style. Further of interest for the oeuvre of architect Poggenbeek.
