Inleiding

Description
Introduction
BOILER HOUSE with LAUNDRY and former POWER STATION from 1907-1908, part of the hospital complex Duin en Bosch. This utility building, located obliquely behind the administration building, provided the power supply for Duin en Bosch. According to the first annual report of the Board of Management of Duin en Bosch, the utility building was tendered in August 1907. The associated chimney to the right (E) of the building has been demolished. The same applies to the ventilation cowls on the roofs of the laundry and the boiler house.
Description
A complex of rectangular building volumes of one storey built on an irregular ground plan under gabled roofs with red plain tiles. The single or paired volumes have different sizes and the ridge direction is southwest-northeast or southeast-northwest. Several extensions with flat roofs adjoin these volumes. Despite the irregular arrangement of the different volumes, unity is achieved through uniformity in use of materials, facade articulation, window types and ornament. The exterior facades are constructed in reddish-brown brickwork in Flemish bond with cut joint and provided with a high plinth with a hardstone top edge. This bevelled top edge gives the building a horizontal accent. The end facades are executed as spout gables with corner pilasters that transition into a stepped frieze provided with weaving and a closing roll moulding. The straight-ended end facade (SE) of the laundry is topped by a half-hipped gable between raised corner pilasters. Most of the long facades are articulated vertically by pilasters and terminated by a list gutter beneath which several stepped corbelled courses of masonry. The facades are predominantly arched cast-iron windows that are placed in pairs and consist of a nine-paned (or twelve-paned) lower sash and a six-paned pivoting window as fanlight. At the level of the attic the end facades are blind or provided with a small cast-iron round window or alternatively two arched six-paned horizontal cast-iron windows. The windows have hardstone drip sills. Hardstone is also used for the seating and covering stones of the spout gables. Above the various arched door openings there are one or two windows of the last-mentioned type depending on the width of the door. The doors are executed as single or double panel doors and mostly provided with a four- or nine-paned window.
The younger southwestern building volume differs somewhat from the other building parts: a plinth and pilasters are absent and the gabled roof, covered with red tuiles du nord, has a projecting edge on profiled brackets. Beneath the latter the two gable ends are provided with a stepped frieze. Internally the utility building is still partially in its original state and includes, amongst other things, two-tone (cream and yellow) tiled floors and pitched roofs resting on iron Polonceau trusses.
Valuation
The boiler house with laundry and former power station is of general importance as a historic-functional component of the hospital complex Duin en Bosch. As part of industrial heritage. Because of its ensemble value.
