Inleiding
WATERTOREN uit 1908-1909, deel uitmakend van het ziekenhuiscomplex Duin en Bosch. De ten noorden van het economiegebouw gesitueerde watertoren werd ontworpen door J. Scholtens, hoofdingenieur van de Provinciale Waterstaat van Noord-Holland. Met het toezicht op de uitvoering werd hoofdopzichter A. van Vliet belast. De uitvoering van het reservoir was in handen van F.A. Neuman, Eschweiler (D). Het met behulp van vijf 36 tot 60 m diepe boorputten opgepompte duinwater werd na te zijn ontijzerd en gefilterd opgeslagen in een waterkelder van waaruit het naar het reservoir van de watertoren werd geperst. In 1936 is de watertoren voorzien van een extra ommanteling van staal en in 1965 is er rond de reservoir-ommanteling een omloop aangebracht. De toren heeft tot eind 70-er jaren dienst gedaan voor de eigen watervoorziening van het Provinciaal Ziekenhuis.
Omschrijving
De 33,50 meter hoge toren heeft een betonnen fundering waarop een achthoekig basement dat evenals de ronde schacht erboven taps toeloopt. Het basement is opgetrokken in bruinrode waalsteen in kruisverband met snijvoeg en aan drie zijden voorzien van een getoogd negenruits venster van gietijzer. In de zuidzijde bevindt zich een terugliggende getoogde deur waarin een zesruits raam. De overgang van het achthoekige basement naar de ronde schacht wordt gevormd door een gepleisterde waterlijst waaronder een fries van gesmoorde baksteen. De in rode baksteen opgetrokken schacht telt tien getoogde zesruits vensters van gietijzer: in de west- en oostkant drie boven elkaar en in de noord- en zuidzijde twee. De ommanteling van het hoogreservoir heeft een flauwhellend kegeldak voorzien van een overstek en een lantaarn. In de ommanteling bevinden zich enkele kleine vensters.
Het INTERIEUR is nog gedeeltelijk oorspronkelijk en onder meer voorzien van een met gele baksteen bestrate parterrevloer, ijzeren ladders en een geklonken ijzeren hoogreservoir met een diameter van 5 meter en een inhoud van 50 kubieke meter. Het reservoir rust op een bodem van het type Intze 1.
Waardering
De watertoren met bijbehorend interieur is van algemeen belang als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het ziekenhuiscomplex Duin en Bosch. Vamwege de industriële waarde en vanwege het ontwerp van de hand van ingenieur J. Scholtens. Verder als markant onderdeel van het complex.

WATER TOWER from 1908-1909, forming part of the hospital complex Duin en Bosch. The water tower, situated to the north of the utility building, was designed by J. Scholtens, chief engineer of the Provincial Water Authority of Noord-Holland. Supervision of the execution was entrusted to chief inspector A. van Vliet. The execution of the reservoir was in the hands of F.A. Neuman, Eschweiler (D). The dune water pumped up with the aid of five boreholes 36 to 60 m deep was, after being deironized and filtered, stored in a water cellar from which it was pressed to the reservoir of the water tower. In 1936 the water tower was provided with an additional steel casing and in 1965 a gallery was placed around the reservoir casing. The tower served until the end of the 1970s for the water supply of the Provincial Hospital.
Description
The tower, 33.50 meters high, has a concrete foundation upon which an octagonal basement that, like the round shaft above it, tapers. The basement is constructed in reddish-brown brickwork in Flemish bond with cut joint and on three sides provided with a arched nine-paned window of cast iron. On the south side there is a recessed arched door with a six-paned window. The transition from the octagonal basement to the round shaft is formed by a plastered drip moulding beneath which is a frieze of smeared brickwork. The shaft, constructed in red brick, has ten arched six-paned windows of cast iron: on the west and east sides three stacked above one another and on the north and south sides two. The casing of the elevated reservoir has a gently sloping conical roof provided with an overhang and a lantern. In the casing there are some small windows.
The INTERIOR is still partially original and includes, amongst other things, a ground-floor floor paved with yellow brick, iron ladders and a riveted iron elevated reservoir with a diameter of 5 meters and a capacity of 50 cubic meters. The reservoir rests on a base of the Intze type 1.
Valuation
The water tower with its associated interior is of general importance as a historic-functional component of the hospital complex Duin en Bosch. Because of its industrial value and because of the design by engineer J. Scholtens. Furthermore as a distinctive component of the complex.
