Omschrijving
GEBOUW H

Description
BUILDING H
The SERVICE BUILDING was constructed in the period 1903-1909 with stylistic motifs drawn from neo-renaissance. It is possible that this service building is also a design by the architectural office Beltman from Enschede. The building is situated at the F.B. Deurvorstplein, near the entrance of the factory complex.
The building is erected on a composite ground plan and comprises two storeys. The facades are built in reddish-brown brick. A grey stone, partly alternated with yellow cladding brick, is incorporated as decoration in the horizontal bands running across the full width of the facade surface. Yellow cladding brick is used in the arch frieze and the roof line. The brickwork is executed in English bond. Along the south and west facades runs a moulded plinth.
The SOUTH FACADE and the WEST FACADE are the representative facades. These facade surfaces have horizontal and vertical articulation through the placement of windows. Originally these were segmental-arch-shaped iron windows with glazing bars, which were once replaced by rectangular steel windows. The windows on the upper floor are slightly smaller in size than the windows on the ground floor. The horizontal articulation of the facades is reinforced by bands, executed in grey stone and yellow cladding brick, which connect the windows to one another at the height of upper, lower and former transom level. The facade surfaces are flanked by brick pilasters, which at the top extend into the arch frieze and the raised brick roof line of the flat roof. In the original condition, a nearly man-high open brickwork as a balustrade stood on this roof line. Ornamental wall anchors, cast by DRU itself, adorn the facade surfaces.
Against the EAST FACADE, with a somewhat less representative character, the single-storey fire-engine house was built in the same architecture. The only difference is that the roof line of grey stone and yellow cladding brick is absent. The three window openings are bricked in. Against the east facade stands another single-storey building under a gabled roof. This does not belong to the service building constructed in the period 1903-1909, but was part of the foundry 1, which was demolished in 1972/73.
The NORTH FACADE was originally not visible and has no further facade articulation. This facade bordered on the old foundry 1.
Valuation
- Of architectural-historical significance as a good example of a service building from the first quarter of the 20th century.
- Of urban-planning significance due to its location at the F.B. Deurvorstplein near the entrance of the complex. The building forms part of a historically developed factory site and plays an important role within it. Furthermore, the building has ensemble value in relation to its surrounding buildings.
- Of cultural-historical significance due to its original function in relation to the production process of the iron foundry, which is connected with the important industrial development in the Liemers and thus represents an aspect of economic history.
