Inleiding

Description
Complex component 24
Introduction
CEMETERY with GRAVE MONUMENTS and associated LAYOUT, as well as four RELIEF STONES and three stone STATUES.
The Roman Catholic CEMETERY was laid out in 1913-1915 on the instructions of the Heilig-Land-Stichting by P. Gerrits following the example of burial grounds in Palestine: a free arrangement of individual and linked garden graves with enclosures and small gates. The landscape layout on the uneven terrain of the Heilig-Land-Stichting consists of irregularly shaped grave fields, a winding path system and planting that on the one hand fits in with the wooded surroundings (deciduous and coniferous trees) and on the other hand planting that more closely matches the picturesque design and arrangement of the graves (conifers, yew, cypresses). In the garden graves many smaller conifers and shrubs have been planted. On the cemetery grounds, several objects have been placed that originally stood at the Sermon on the Mount, namely: three stone RELIEFS at the entrance to the cemetery, one stone RELIEF in a recent grave mound at the edge of the cemetery and three stone STATUES along a path on the cemetery. These reliefs and statues were designed by P. Gerrits and date from the period 1950-1955.
In the design of the 6-hectare cemetery, the final stations of the cross have also been incorporated: at the bottom of the slope in the north-east an eastern city gate and at the highest point in the middle of the cemetery an artificial stone Mount Golgotha and the Holy Sepulchre (these objects are protected separately, as is the grave of Piet Gerrits). The deceased on this cemetery thus have as it were a place close to the risen Lord.
The cemetery, consecrated on 28 November 1915, formed part of the adjacent Biblical Open Air Museum until 1988, but has since been managed independently.
Description
A Roman Catholic CEMETERY laid out on a hill, of which the centre located at the top has a landscape LAYOUT with irregularly shaped grave plots, a winding path system and predominantly evergreen planting, and of which the lower barely used edges in terms of planting more closely match the combined deciduous and coniferous forest of the surroundings. The heart of the cemetery is enclosed by a hedge of rhododendrons.
The GRAVE MONUMENTS on the cemetery each consist of a "garden" that is enclosed by a low wall of marl blocks. The gardens have a predominantly rectangular shape, sometimes with rounded corners. The enclosure of the simplest graves steps down at the front to ground level. The simple crosses and memorial stones executed in natural stone are usually incorporated into the enclosure. The richer grave monuments and larger family grave monuments often have an entrance gate (some with a built arch) which is frequently closed by a copper or bronze hinged gate. The majority of these rectangular hinged gates consist of plates or lattice work into which the Christogram is incorporated. The richer grave crosses stand free in the garden and are executed in various forms, such as a cross with an inscribed circle. Some memorial stones are crowned by a copper arch with text or cross, or are provided with a figurative relief representation. The majority of the total of 49 representations were designed by P. Gerrits and show an angel, Mary with child or the figure of Christ. The significance of the graves lies not so much in the individual value, but rather in the collective meaning which they, in particular through design, use of materials and positioning within the layout by P. Gerrits, have for the distinctly oriental character of the cemetery.
At the entrance to the cemetery three RELIEF STONES are displayed. The representation on the first rectangular stone has as its theme: "The calling of Peter: 'I say to you: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church', (Matt. 16, 18)." In the middle of this representation Peter and Christ face each other. They are surrounded by the eleven other apostles. The representation on the second rectangular stone has as its theme: "Jesus and the Canaanite woman: 'But she came to him and knelt before him and said: Lord, help me', (Matt 15, 25)." In the foreground of this representation a woman kneels with raised arms before Christ. In the background spectators look on from a staircase. The third stone with a lancet arch has as its theme: "The sower of weeds: 'But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away', (Matt. 13, 25b)." In a schematically indicated landscape stands a stooping sowing figure with a head covering.
On the representation of the stone set into a grave mound we see Christ bending forward reaching his hand to a woman lying on a mattress. On the left in the background a number of people look on. The three free-standing STATUES are made of artificial stone and have a height of approximately 130 centimetres. Close to the entrance to the cemetery stands John: a bearded man with long hair on bare feet. A little further on stands the sower along the path: a bearded man with a head covering, a straw sack and sandals. At the next junction stands the good shepherd: a bearded man in sandals with a head covering and a lamb on his shoulders.
Valuation
Roman Catholic CEMETERY (1913-1915) with GRAVE MONUMENTS and associated LAYOUT, as well as four RELIEF STONES and three stone STATUES (1950-1955).
- Of architectural, artistic and garden-historical value as essential components of a collection of buildings and objects in oriental style (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing) which together form the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting. The layout, largely preserved in outline, with landscape elements, the garden graves with low walls, small gates, crosses and memorial stones, as well as the four relief stones and three statues added later, are of particular importance for the work of artist P. Gerrits. This well-preserved cemetery has rarity value because of the qualities mentioned.
- Of urban planning value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which is of national importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective. The cemetery is of particular significance because of its striking location, which is connected to the layout of the complex and the structure of the circular route over the grounds.
- Of cultural-historical value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which represents a distinctive and also rare expression of a religious development. The grave monuments have funerary-historical and local/regional genealogical value.
