Inleiding

Introduction

Artificially raised stone CRUCIFIX HILL with CRYPT, corresponding to the hill of Golgotha in Jerusalem where Christ was crucified. This object was built in 1915 at the behest of the Holy Land Foundation and completed before 1928 with three MOSAIC REPRESENTATIONS of the tenth, eleventh and thirteenth station according to designs by P. Gerrits and executed by the firm 'P. Beyer & Söhne-Mozaik-Köln'. The Crucifix Hill with the wooden cross symbolises the twelfth station "Christ dies on the cross". On Palm Sunday 1915 the cross was planted on Golgotha. Within the complex of the Holy Land Foundation this object forms part of the theme "Passion of Christ".

The Crucifix Hill is situated at the highest point of the hill on which the Roman Catholic cemetery of the Holy Land Foundation is laid out. Until 1988 the cemetery formed part of the adjacent Biblical Open-Air Museum, but has since functioned independently.

Description

The CRUCIFIX HILL executed in concrete has an irregular ground plan. On the north side a gently rising access way begins which climbs up along the edge of the hill and ends at the top at a large simple wooden cross. Along this slope texts are scratched into the hillside and two arched recesses are provided in which MOSAIC REPRESENTATIONS of the tenth, eleventh and thirteenth station are placed. The tenth station concerns the scene of the disrobing. In the centre of the representation a soldier is engaged in disrobing Christ. The soldier bent forward on the left side is preparing a mixture of wine and vinegar. A higher placed military figure looks on from the right. Against a neutral background three wooden tau crosses are depicted. The eleventh station concerns the crucifixion of Christ. Executioners are engaged in crucifying Christ and the two murderers. In the middle of the representation Christ steps, watched by John and Mary, onto the footrest to take his place against the cross. To the left and right of Him the two murderers are being hoisted against the standing crosses, fastened with ropes at the arms and nailed with spikes through the feet.

The thirteenth station concerns the removal of Christ from the cross. Mary supports Christ who is being taken down from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea. They are surrounded by John, weeping women and the Roman soldier who professes his faith. The cross is crowned by a board with the inscription: "JESUS OF NAZARETH / KING OF THE JEWS". The background consists of a schematic representation of a church front. Within the hill a CRYPT is incorporated which is accessible on the south-west side via a portico with colonnade. The crypt has a cruciform ground plan. The free-standing altar is positioned for the crossing arm opposite the entrance. The graves are housed in rows of six and six layers high in the crossing arms.

Valuation

Artificial CRUCIFIX HILL with CRYPT (1915) and three MOSAIC REPRESENTATIONS (before 1928).

- Of architectural and art historical value as essential components of a collection of buildings and objects in eastern style derived from biblical history (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing), and of particular importance for the oeuvre of visual artist P. Gerrits. These relatively well-preserved components of a former devotional park, now part of the Roman Catholic cemetery, form curiosities within national architectural and art history.

- Of urban planning value as essential components of the Holy Land Foundation complex which is of national importance in terms of culture and architectural history. The Crucifix Hill is of particular significance because of its striking and aesthetically pleasing setting, which is connected with the development of the complex and the chronological development of the route around the site.

- Of cultural historical value as essential components of the Holy Land Foundation complex which forms a distinctive and also rare expression of a religious development.
