Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

ORIENTAL CITY GATE (ca. 1920) and EIGHTH STATION (ca. 1931).

The ORIENTAL CITY GATE was built around 1920 on behalf of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, probably after a design by P. Gerrits. The object is located on the grounds of the Roman Catholic cemetery and is situated at the edge of it, near the Garden of Olives. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, the city gate - as a bearer of the seventh (removed) and eighth station - forms part of the theme "Passion of Christ". This mosaic has since been replaced by a cremation wall. The EIGHTH STATION "Christ meets and comforts the weeping women" was added around 1931 by P. Gerrits to the city gate in the form of an artificial stone RELIEF against an added wall on the left front of the gate.

Description

CITY GATE executed in Oriental style on a complex ground plan. The brick facades are mortared in half-brick bond and whitewashed. In some places the plasterwork is executed with false joints. The facades are finished with a stepped projection or crowned with rectangular crenellations with narrow loopholes. Below each crenellation is a firing slit. At the front and rear of the city gate is a sunken passage with a rounded arch. The passage at the front can be closed by a clamped double door. Above this passage, at the height of the crenellations, is a small machicolation. In the rear wall is a large rectangular niche in which originally a mosaic representation of the seventh station was placed and in which wall niches for urns are now placed.

The EIGHTH STATION consists of a set of four artificial stone reliefs against a neutral background, depicting "Christ meets and comforts the weeping women". On the left, Simon of Cyrene walks with the crossbeam. In front of him stands Christ who turns to the weeping women of Jerusalem: "Women of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep rather for yourselves and for your children" (Luke 23, 28). The weeping women with children are divided into three groups. One group consists of a series of busts placed on the wall.

The chequered plastered walls in the city gate are provided with wall benches and some scratched-in texts, such as: "Therefore, if we wish to approach him, we must go outside the camp and bear his reproach with him, for we too have here no lasting city, but seek the one to come". The wooden ceiling is supported by beams laid on the walls.

Appraisal

CITY GATE from ca. 1920 with EIGHTH STATION from ca. 1931.

- Of architectural and art-historical value as essential components of a collection of buildings and objects derived from biblical history in Oriental style (in terms of design, material use and/or detailing), as well as of particular importance for the oeuvre of visual artist P. Gerrits. These well-preserved components of a former devotional park, now part of the Roman Catholic cemetery, form curiosities within national architectural and art history.

- Of urban-planning value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex, which is of national importance in terms of cultural and architectural history. The components are of particular significance because of their attractive landscape setting, which is connected to the development of the complex and the chronological development of the route through the grounds.

- Of cultural-historical value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex, which forms a distinctive and likewise rare expression of a religious development.

The seventh station "Christ falls the second time beneath the cross" was executed in 1920 as a mosaic representation by the firm P. Beyer & Söhne-Mozaik-Köln after a design by P. Gerrits. In this mosaic representation it was to be seen that Simon took over the cross from the fallen Christ, a Roman soldier who stretched out his helping hands and representatives of the hostile parties (Pharisee, priest, scribe). The mosaic is stored in the depot.
