Inleiding

complex component no. 10

Introduction

The SANHEDRIN, the supreme administrative and judicial body for Jews in Judea, was built in 1940 by order of the Heilig-Land-Stichting according to a design by P. Gerrits. No historical Sanhedrin model served as a basis for this building. However, archaeological finds from Palestine were drawn upon in certain details. This building, strongly introverted in character with its closed external facades, originally housed the High Council. The Sanhedrin and the SCULPTURAL GROUPS arranged within it illustrate the events relating to the condemnation of Christ. The sculptural group of the members of the High Council as well as the sculptures in the gallery were created around 1952 by P. Gerrits. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, the Sanhedrin forms part of the theme "public life of Christ".

The Sanhedrin is located in the northern part of the Bijbels Openluchtmuseum; originally situated freely at some distance from the Palace of Pilate, but since 1978 it forms part of the so-called Oriental street which connects both pre-war buildings.

Description

Block-shaped building on a complex ground plan of one and two storeys surrounding an inner courtyard. The rectangular building volumes have flat roofs.

The external FACADES are rendered white and provided with only a few rectangular windows of various sizes. The window openings in the front facade are closed off by coarse-mesh screens of wooden battens. The entrance is located in the centre of the front facade and consists of a bolted double door (bolts in herringbone pattern) and a rendered frame. Above the entrance there is on the upper storey a double wooden dummy door. Some facades are topped by a simply profiled cornice, and others by a row of roof tiles laid in mortar.

The tiled rectangular INNER COURTYARD is surrounded on all sides by an unjoinered arcade in one and two storeys. The arcade on the entrance side is executed double on the ground floor and has a pavement of stones. On the far side of the courtyard, the two pillars marking the entrance to the High Council chamber have a proto-Aeolic capital. The stone corner staircase in the courtyard is a dead-end stair. The upper storey, which is accessible via a staircase in the arcade, has two closed sides with a few rectangular windows. The other two sides are opened respectively to the courtyard by a colonnade and an arcade. The facades on the courtyard side are topped by a row of roof tiles laid in mortar. The Sanhedrin contains three SCULPTURAL GROUPS. One sculptural group is arranged on the left side of the inner courtyard and consists of two men seated on stools and a maidservant. The second group is arranged on the right side of the inner courtyard and consists of three standing men in conversation (Pharisees?). In the large room at the rear of the building there is a third sculptural group consisting of 11 members of the High Council seated scattered on wall benches. These men have their gaze directed towards the place in this room where images of Christ and a soldier originally stood. The bearded men of the High Council are dressed in long togas with wraps and headdresses and sandals. All sculptures are painted in polychrome.

Valuation

SANHEDRIN from 1940 with three SCULPTURAL GROUPS from c. 1952.

- Of architectural and art-historical value as essential components of a collection of buildings and objects in Oriental style derived from biblical history (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing), as well as of particular significance for the oeuvre of sculptor P. Gerrits. These well-preserved components of a former devotional park, now Bijbels Openluchtmuseum, form curiosities within national architectural and art history.

- Of urban design value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which is of national cultural and architectural-historical significance. The sanhedrin is of particular importance because of its attractive landscape setting, which is connected to the layout of the complex and the chronological development of the route around the grounds.

- Of cultural-historical value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which forms a special and at the same time rare expression of a religious movement.
