Inleiding

Description
Complex component 17
Introduction
The ASCENSION DOME was built in 1916 by order of the Heilig-Land-Stichting to a design by architect J. Stuyt that is related to the dome rotunda of the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem. The ENCLOSURE dates from 1918-1919. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, the object forms part of the theme "Passion of Christ".
The ascension dome stands on top of a hill in the far north of the present Biblical Open-Air Museum and is visually connected by a sight axis with the Roman Catholic cemetery situated further south, on which, among other things, the Holy Sepulchre and the Crucifix Hill are located.
Description
The octagonal central building with dome, built in brickwork, is plastered. The building has on all eight sides a broad pointed arch-shaped wall opening with in the quoins respectively two coupled columns (profiled bases, granite shaft, cube capitals). The surrounding pointed arch arcade is closed off by a broad band. The gable closure consists of a stepwise projecting list on ashlar. The eight sides of the exterior facade are each crowned by a flat pediment. The pediments are connected with the fields of the octagonal dome vault. The vault fields are painted orange on the inside. The tile floor is black and white chequered.
At some distance from the ascension dome, a plastered stone enclosure was installed in 1918-1919. The low wall has three openings in which iron revolving gates are set. The assembly of balusters and rails forms a cross motif.
