Inleiding

Description
Complex Component 07
Introduction
SERMON ON THE MOUNT consisting of 11 concrete RELIEFS that were made between 1950 and 1952 by Piet Gerrits as well as one STONE with a beatitude. The Sermon on the Mount reliefs belong to his last major works for the Heilig-Land-Stichting. By means of these reliefs a number of sayings from the Sermon on the Mount according to Matthew are illustrated. Christian theologians consider this Sermon on the Mount as a succinct summary of Christ's proclamation. The great literary and aesthetic significance of it is rooted in the traditions of Judaism and is also recognised by non-Christians.
On the reliefs, which are executed in the realistic and narrative manner characteristic of Piet Gerrits's late work, five stories from the Old Testament and five stories from the New Testament are depicted which have the same import as the utterances of Jesus. The stoning of Stephen stands in the sixth place and thus forms the division between the reliefs from the Old Testament and the New Testament. Above the Sermon on the Mount originally stood an image of Jesus. The image was placed above the relief with Stephen, to indicate the continuation of Jesus's teaching in the lives of his followers. Piet Gerrits calls the actual content of the Sermon on the Mount 'the doctrine of the new righteousness' as a perfection of the old Law. He contrasts Jewish nationalism with the moral law in spirit. Originally, a number of stones with beatitudes also stood at the Sermon on the Mount. Nowadays, on the right side of the Sermon on the Mount one of these stones can still be seen. A number of stones with texts lie in the wood. Also, a number of other reliefs formed part of the Sermon on the Mount. Three are located behind the Eastern Inn and three are located at the so-called archaeological project. In addition, a number of scenes were visualised by free-standing figures, such as Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well (disappeared), the good shepherd (relocated to the cemetery), the prodigal son (disappeared) and the sower (relocated to the cemetery).
The Sermon on the Mount reliefs and the stone form part of the theme "public life of Christ" and were originally located between the Eastern Inn and the fishermen's village built in the mid-1970s (20th century).
Description
The RELIEFS are placed in a concrete retaining wall. At the far left there is a text as a motto for the section from the Old Testament: '..If your righteousness does not exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven' (Matt.5, 12). Subsequently, from left to right, the following stories are depicted: Cain kills Abel; David and Nathan; Adam and Eve; Susanna and the Elders; David and Saul; Stoning of Stephen; The widow's mite; the man who hoarded treasures for himself; The Pharisee and the Tax Collector; the merciless servant and finally the merciful Samaritan. The series is concluded with the motto for the New Testament section: '..Be therefore perfect as your heavenly father is perfect'. The free-standing STONE is provided with the following beatitude: '..Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied'. In the following text the images on the reliefs are described in more detail, whereby the corresponding Bible quotation is also mentioned.
1) Cain and Abel "You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment" (Matt.5, 21-22).
In the foreground Abel lies stretched out on the ground. On the right the flock of sheep, from which the burnt offering was taken. In the background Cain flees, hands to his ears so as not to hear God's voice (Gen.4, 1-16).
2) David and Nathan "You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matt.5, 27-28).
The prophet Nathan, staff in hand, points at David. He has driven Uriah the Hittite, a soldier, to his death in order to possess his wife Bathsheba. David, sitting on a bench, knows himself to be guilty and hides his head in his hands. Between them stands a table with a bowl and bottle. To the left and rear hangs a shield and sword, the sword points to the impending death of Absalom, the son of David, who must pay for his father's transgression (II Sam.12, 1-14).
3) Adam and Eve "It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery" (Matt.5, 31-32).
What God has joined together, no human can separate. Adam and Eve look upward in adoration. Adam has both arms raised, Eve folds her hands in a praying gesture. Their modesty is covered with Eve's hair and the head of a deer. Both have a halo. Various animals are present: camel, horse, deer, lamb, donkey, cattle, goat, lion pair, on the ground a lamb, in the background a bear coming out of its cave, birds, a palm tree and mountains. In the water swim various fish and a water snake (Gen.3, 1-24).
4) Susanna and the Elders "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn. But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all" (Matt.5, 33-34).
Daniel judges over the elders (on the right) who whisper together, one covering his ear. On the left stands Susanna who was unjustly accused of adultery and is now acquitted. In the background a city gate (Dan.13, 28-63).
5) David and Saul "You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil" (Matt.5, 38-39).
David and Abishai find the sleeping Saul. David prevents his companion from killing him, but takes Saul's spear and water jug. In the background the sleeping men of Saul (I Sam.26, 7-12).
6) Stoning of Stephen "And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit'. Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them'" (Acts.7,59-60).
Stephen, raising his hands, is stoned by two men. In the background a city gate (Acts.7, 59-60).
7) The widow's mite "So when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward" (Matt.6,3-4).
A Pharisee gives alms to a beggar who looks at him pleadingly. Behind the Pharisee two men who look at him admiringly. In the background a widow with her children who inconspicuously gives alms (Mark.12,41-44).
8) The man who hoarded treasures for himself "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matt.6,19-20).
A rich landowner sits pensively among the riches he has accumulated. Above them, however, death looms, the sword already half drawn from its sheath: remember to die (Luke.12, 13-21).
9) The Pharisee and the Tax Collector "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you" (Matt.6, 6-7).
In the background a Pharisee stands praying in the temple with his prayer shawl. In the background the tax collector who, shoes off, humbly and inconspicuously turns to God (Luke.18,9-14).
10) The merciless servant "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you" (Matt.7,1-2).
A king reckons with his servants. Out of compassion he forgives the servant who owes him money. But this servant attacks someone who owes him money and even throws this debtor in prison. In the background the king reckoning with a servant (Matt.18,23-24).
11) The merciful Samaritan "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets" (Matt.7,12).
The Samaritan descends to the man who has been wounded and left by robbers. In the distance the figures of a priest and the Levite who passed by without helping.
