Inleiding

Complex Component 06

Introduction

The EASTERN HOSTEL was built in 1923 on behalf of the Heilig-Land-Stichting by P. Gerrits following the example of a similar building in Jordan. The building, strongly inward-looking with its closed external facades, offered in its original function shelter and protection to the people and animals of a caravan. In the two-storey gateway building are located the bedrooms for the wealthy and the storage room for goods. The gateway building is flanked on the right side by the lower residence of the innkeeper. On the roof terrace of this residence a simple leafy hut has been built.

The eastern hostel is located in the eastern part of the site of the present Biblical Open-Air Museum, and is situated at a small distance from the so-called house of the tax collector. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, the object forms part of the theme "public life of Christ".

Description

The EASTERN HOSTEL is a building on a rectangular ground plan of one, and at the entrance two storeys with flat roofs surrounding a large inner courtyard. The building is strongly inward-facing in its layout. The external facades are largely blank and are articulated by buttresses. The FACADE on the front is clad with natural stone. Through the use of multiple types of natural stone in different sizes and colours, successive building phases are suggested. The recessed entrance with clamped double door is located approximately in the middle and is closed by a blunt pointed arch. Above the entrance on the upper storey is a rectangular window that is closed by a lattice of wooden bars. The remaining facades are plastered and extremely sparsely provided with small windows with wooden lattices.

The INNER COURTYARD is surrounded on three sides by a gallery with benches. Above the bench on the south side of the courtyard, a canopy on wooden posts has been installed for shelter. The remaining two sides open onto the courtyard by means of a blunt pointed arch arcade. Behind each arch is in the wall a blind door with oil lamp niches that suggest adjoining bedrooms. In the unpaved courtyard is a water well and a drinking trough for the animals. The gateway building and the flanking innkeeper's residence have single and coupled windows with wooden lattices in various formats. The passage to the entrance gate is closed with a round arch. At the far left a stone staircase leads to the leafy hut on the roof of the innkeeper's residence. The INTERIOR of the small innkeeper's residence consists of a rectangular room that is subdivided by two masonry broad arches into smaller spaces with different floor levels. In the white plastered walls small niches for oil lamps are left. The ceiling is carried by wooden posts that are arranged in the length direction of the room.

Valuation

EASTERN HOSTEL from 1923.

- Of architectural historical value as an essential component of a collection of buildings and objects in eastern style derived from biblical history (in design, material use and/or detailing), as well as of particular importance for the oeuvre of visual artist P. Gerrits. This component of a former devotional park, now Biblical Open-Air Museum, which has been preserved relatively intact in interior and exterior, forms a curiosity within national architectural history.

- Of urban planning value as an essential component of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which is of national cultural and architectural historical importance. The object is of particular significance because of its location, which is connected to the development of the complex and the chronological build-up of the circuit around the site.

- Of cultural historical value as an essential component of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which forms a special and also rare expression of a religious development.
