Inleiding

Complex component 05
Introduction
TOLLCOLLECTOR'S DWELLING/CARPENTER'S WORKSHOP built in 1924 commissioned by the Heilig-Land-Stichting (Holy Land Foundation) according to a design by PIET GERRITS. The building, originally fitted out as a carpenter's workshop and the house of Joseph and Mary in Nazareth, forms part of a series of buildings and objects intended to give a clear impression of the so-called hidden life of Christ. The building is situated between the sheepfold/grotto of Bethlehem and the Oriental inn. Several inscriptions still commemorate the original function, such as the text on the gate attached to the dwelling which reads: "and Jesus came into his own country; and they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief." According to the Bible, Jesus was known in Nazareth until his thirtieth year as the carpenter. In the dwelling, various carpenter's products were originally displayed, such as a cradle, a threshing board, an ox yoke and a plough. Later the building acquired the function of a toll collector's dwelling and a toll collector's office was fitted out in the extension on the left. The dwelling is larger than the farmhouses in the village of Nazareth. The doors (some with carved work) and windows are based on historical examples. Thanks to the heavy supporting wall between the high and low parts of the house it was possible to build a small flat dome.
Description
Former CARPENTER'S WORKSHOP or house of Joseph and Mary in Nazareth, now fitted out as a TOLL COLLECTOR'S DWELLING. The facades of the building are partly clad with roughly dressed limestone blocks and partly rendered with cement. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of three cubic building masses of different heights to which a small gate has been added. The building has flat roofs with the exception of the highest building mass which has a dome. The roofs and dome are executed in concrete.
The lowest building mass on the left originally contained the carpenter's workshop which is now fitted out as a toll collector's office. The building mass to the right of this is fitted out as a dwelling and consists of two building masses which are internally connected to each other.
The FRONT FACADE is asymmetrically arranged and is formed by the recessed facade of the toll collector's office and the facade of the dwelling situated to its right. The facade of the toll collector's office has a doorway closed off by a blind basket-arch with three coupled mirror-clasped doors. The facade of the dwelling has a segmental arch doorway containing a double panelled door with decorative carved work (Star of David, seven-branched menorah, vase and branches). Access to the entrance is via two steps. Above the entrance a wooden canopy has been installed. The asymmetrically arranged, partly rendered LEFT SIDE FACADE is formed by the facade of the extended workshop and the recessed facade of the dwelling. The facade of the workshop is executed blind. In the facade of the dwelling there are two rectangular window openings positioned high in the wall, each equipped with a concrete plate with eight round openings.
The rendered REAR FACADE is executed blind.
In the rendered RIGHT SIDE FACADE there are three rectangular windows with multi-pane glazing and a buttress in the low left section. The higher right section of the facade has a rectangular window positioned high in the wall containing a cantilevered grille of wooden slats.
The INTERIOR of the dwelling consists of two interconnected rooms, the higher rear room being furnished with a vault dome and the lower room being furnished with a simple concrete ceiling, supported by roughly dressed tree trunks. The higher room is separated from the lower room by means of a round arch and has continuous built-in benches which, like the lower part of the walls, are painted in a reddish-brown colour. Recesses for candles are left in the walls.
