Inleiding

Complex component 02

Introduction

The SYNAGOGUE was built in 1935 on behalf of the Heilig-Land-Stichting (Holy Land Foundation) to a design by P. Gerrits. The floor plan and interior are based on a small Sefardic synagogue which Gerrits studied on site in the period 1906-1911. The layout is determined by the positioning of the ark, the bimah and the women's section; in this case respectively in the centre of the rear facade, in the middle of the rectangular prayer room and on the left side. In terms of type and decoration, this building is related to synagogues from the period 300 to 600 AD. The synagogue is situated in the south-eastern part of the grounds of the present Bijbels Openluchtmuseum (Biblical Open-Air Museum), and is located at the village square of the village of Nazareth. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, the synagogue forms part of the theme "hidden life of Christ".

Description

Built against a gentle slope, the SYNAGOGUE consists of a walled rectangular forecourt and a single-storey prayer room on a rectangular floor plan. The prayer room has a flat roof with a small cupola in the centre. The front facade of the prayer room and the front of the forecourt wall are constructed in blocks of marl. The remaining facades of brick have an irregular bond pattern. The rectangular window openings in the regularly laid-out facades are closed by coarse-mesh 'screens' of wooden laths.

The forecourt is accessible from the village square via an entrance with a wooden door at the far right of the front wall. The walls of the forecourt, just over two metres high, are lined inside with clay-coloured plaster and provided with a running wall bench. As shelter, a covering of reeds and clay on wooden posts is provided above the benches. The forecourt, rising in tiers, is paved with stone and has a cylindrical well in the centre.

The symmetrically laid-out front facade of the synagogue has an entrance with wooden double doors to the prayer room at the far left and right. Both entrances are closed by a lintel with relief representations: seven-branched candelabrum and two rosettes with six-pointed star (left), serpent and two beasts (right). Between both entrances is a stone wall bench. The INTERIOR consists of a rectangular room which is subdivided into three aisles by two rows of three posts each on stone bases. The ceiling consists of a beam layer. The left aisle serves as a women's gallery and is separated from the adjacent aisle by low wooden railings. In the centre aisle stands the bimah, made of wood: a closed octagonal platform with stairs and around it a bench, a balustrade with an extended lectern and a finely carved canopy. The rear bay is raised in tiers. Here in the rear facade is a niche with a finely worked wooden chest recalling the ark of the covenant, in which the scrolls of the law are kept. The niche can be closed by a curtain of textile attached to posts. The whitewashed walls are provided with a red painted plinth with an adjoining zigzag motif. On either side of the ark are some symbolic decorations painted: the palm tree, ram's horn, seven-branched candelabrum, censer and the five-pointed star.

Valuation

SYNAGOGUE from 1935.

- Of architectural-historical value as an essential component of a collection of buildings and objects in eastern style derived from biblical history (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing), and also of particular importance for the oeuvre of visual artist P. Gerrits. This component of a former devotional park, now the Bijbels Openluchtmuseum, which has been preserved in reasonably good condition both inside and out, forms a curiosity within the national architectural history. It is a good example of a reconstruction of a Sefardic synagogue from the period 300 to 600 AD.

- Of urban planning value as an essential component of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which is of national importance in terms of cultural and architectural history. The object is of particular significance because of its attractive landscape setting, which is connected to the development of the complex and the chronological layout of the route across the grounds.

- Of cultural-historical value as an essential component of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which forms a distinctive and also rare expression of a religious development.
