Inleiding

Complex component 01

Introduction

The village NAZARETH was built on commission of the Heilig-Land-Stichting and has two construction phases. The oldest section, designed by P. Gerrits following the example of El Hosson, dates from 1916-1918 and gives an image of a Palestinian village from the early twentieth century: tightly packed small dwellings on short streets with stairs. The ground plan, layout and detailing of the dwellings correspond with Eastern examples. Marl blocks were used as building material which, in contrast to the houses in Palestine, have been rendered with mud plaster because of the wet climate in the Netherlands. The village houses are now known and arranged as, among others, the house of the water seller and a flax business. Beside the village three olive trees have been planted. This old part of the village is situated at the village square near the somewhat younger synagogue. In 1971 the second storey and roof of a dwelling dating from 1916 were demolished. In this storey was a chapel dedicated to the Annunciation.

Two stone SCULPTURES by P. Gerrits have been placed in the village.

The village Nazareth is located in the southeastern part of the grounds of the current Biblical Open-Air Museum. Within the complex of the Heilig-Land-Stichting it forms part of the theme "hidden life of Christ".

Description

A row of cubic houses of one and two storeys with flat roofs on rectangular ground plan, situated on two short streets with stairs that lead onto a square paved with cobblestones. On one of the roofs a simple leafy hut has been built. Most of the facades and garden walls are rendered. Only at one dwelling with adjoining garden walls and gates are the marl stones left exposed. The archway or straight-closed entrances of the dwellings have wooden doors and generally a simple roof covering. Most of the openings have a rectangular form and are closed on the inside or outside by a coarse mesh grille of wooden slats. Each dwelling is preceded by a walled small garden in which the baking oven and sometimes also a rainwater cistern can be found.

The arrangement of all houses is virtually identical: a rectangular room that is divided by a level difference into a space for domestic animals with feeding troughs in the walls, and a higher level area for people and household goods. The spaces are separated from each other by a brickwork arch.

On the village square which adjoins the houses in a northeastern direction there is a stone sculpture of a beggar. It is a man with a beard, Palestinian dress and bare feet, seated cross-legged under a roof covering. At the foot of the most southern village street, at the water spring, stands a woman with pitcher and child. The sculpture is a barefoot walking woman dressed in a blue robe and white loose-hanging headscarf. In her right hand she carries a pitcher. With her left hand she supports a child seated on her shoulder.

Valuation

Village NAZARETH and two stone SCULPTURES from 1916-1918.

- Of architectural and art historical value as essential components of a collection of buildings and objects in Eastern style drawn from biblical history (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing), and of particular importance for the oeuvre of visual artist P. Gerrits. These components of a former devotion park, now Biblical Open-Air Museum, preserved fairly intact in interior and exterior, form curiosities within national architecture and art history.

- Of urban planning value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which is of national importance in terms of culture and architecture history. The village and the sculptures are of particular significance because of the landscape aesthetic setting, which is connected with the layout of the complex and the chronological development of the route through the grounds.

- Of cultural historical value as essential components of the Heilig-Land-Stichting complex which forms a distinctive and also rare expression of a religious development.
