Inleiding
De WINKELWONING is gebouwd in 1919 in opdracht van de firma P. de Gruyter & Zn. door W.G. Welsing in een stijl die invloeden vertoont van art deco. De Arnhemse architect Welsing ontwierp in 1906 in Arnhem zijn eerste winkelpand voor het kruideniersbedrijf De Gruyter. Daarna werd hij de huisarchitect van De Gruyter. Van 1915 tot 1925 werkte het architectenbureau van Welsing alleen maar voor De Gruyter. Het meest opvallende aan het pand en typerend voor de verschillende vestigingen van De Gruyter is het gebruik van de blauw en goud geglazuurde tegels in de omlijsting van deuren, vensters, pui en borstweringen. De tegels werden volgens een bepaald procedé vervaardigd in Frankrijk. In het interieur is achter een wand van gipsplaten het figuratieve tegeltableau op de achterwand van de winkel bewaard gebleven.
De winkelwoning is gelegen op een wigvormig terrein tussen de Berg en Dalseweg en de Ten Hoetstraat aan het stervormige Mariaplein, waar zeven straten op uit komen. Het Mariaplein vormt een belangrijk stedenbouwkundig onderdeel van het laat negentiende-eeuwse uitbreidingsplan dat werd uitgevoerd na de afbraak van de vestingwerken en is gebaseerd op de ontwerpen van Bert Brouwer. Het pand ligt binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht.
Omschrijving
De WINKELWONING heeft een samengestelde plattegrond, die bestaat uit een grote rechthoek met afgeschuinde hoeken, het hoofdvolume en links een kleinere rechthoek met één afgeschuinde hoek, de uitbouw. De winkelwoning heeft een kelder, twee bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping onder een samengesteld hoog opgaand, geknikt schilddak met geglazuurde rode verbeterde Hollandse pannen en drie keramische pironnen. In het voorschild bevindt zich een houten dakkapel met drie zesruits ramen. De uitbouw links heeft een tussenverdieping.
De winkelwoning is opgetrokken uit rode baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband. De verschillende gevelvlakken worden van elkaar gescheiden door lisenen, waardoor rechthoekige spaarvelden zijn ontstaan. De winkelpui is bekleed met blauw geglazuurde, deels met reliëf versierde tegels met vergulde accenten. Op de eerste verdieping zijn bij het hoofdblok de vensterpartijen op dezelfde wijze omlijst en de spaarvelden voorzien medaillons van blauwe reliëftegels. De uitbouw heeft een plint en tussen de verdiepingen een door de lisenen onderbroken band van blauw geglazuurde tegels. De gevels worden afgesloten door een brede geprofileerde bakgoot op klossen. Alle ramen van de tweede bouwlaag en de twee klapramen op de tussenverdieping van de uitbouw zijn voorzien van gekleurd glas-in-lood.
De VOORGEVEL heeft in de eerste bouwlaag van het hoofdblok de winkelpui, waarbij de winkeldeuren zich in de afgeschuinde hoeken bevinden. De winkeldeuren, waarvan de linker is vervangen door een raam, zijn voorzien van schouderboogvormig afgesloten bovenlichten met erboven een rand van drie ruitjes. In het midden bevinden zich twee grote schouderboogvormig afgesloten winkelramen met aan de bovenzijde een rand kleine ruitjes van verschillende vorm. De puibalk met de naam "P. DE GRUYTER & ZN" is afgedekt. In de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich boven de pui drie door de tegelomlijsting gekoppelde vensters met zesruits draairamen en vierruits bovenlichten.
De RECHTER ZIJGEVEL heeft in de tweede bouwlaag twee vensters van hetzelfde type.
De uitbouw links heeft in de VOORGEVEL van beneden naar boven drie vensters met resp. een raam, waarvan de roeden zijn verwijderd, een zesruits klapraam en een negenruits draairaam met zesruits bovenlicht.
De LINKER ZIJGEVEL heeft achtereenvolgens een met een strek afgesloten deur, een zesruits klapraam en een negenruits draairaam met zesruits bovenlicht. De vensters in de uitbouw worden afgesloten met een rollaag. Het INTERIEUR is, afgezien van de eenvoudige houten trapleuning en de betegeling van twee wc's, vrijwel geheel gemoderniseerd.

The SHOP WITH RESIDENTIAL QUARTERS was built in 1919 on commission of the firm P. de Gruyter & Zn. by W.G. Welsing in a style showing influences of art deco. The SHOP WITH RESIDENTIAL QUARTERS has a composite ground plan consisting of a large rectangle with chamfered corners, the main volume, and on the left a smaller rectangle with one chamfered corner, the extension. The shop with residential quarters has a basement, two storeys and an attic storey under a composite steeply pitched hipped roof with glazed red improved Dutch tiles and three ceramic finials. In the front roof slope is a wooden dormer with three six-light windows. The extension on the left has a mezzanine.
The shop with residential quarters is built of red brick, laid in English bond. The various facade surfaces are separated from each other by pilaster strips, creating rectangular blank panels. The shop front is clad with blue glazed tiles, partly decorated with relief and gilded accents. On the first storey of the main block the window groups are framed in the same manner and the blank panels provided with medallions of blue relief tiles. The extension has a plinth and between the storeys a band of blue glazed tiles interrupted by the pilaster strips. The facades are finished with a broad moulded brick gutter on corbels. All windows of the second storey and the two casement windows on the mezzanine of the extension are fitted with coloured leaded glass.
The FRONT FACADE has in the first storey of the main block the shop front, with the shop doors located in the chamfered corners. The shop doors, of which the left one has been replaced by a window, are fitted with shoulder-arched fanlights with above them a band of three panes. In the middle are two large shoulder-arched shop windows with at the top a band of small panes of different shapes. The shop front beam with the name "P. DE GRUYTER & ZN" is covered over. In the second storey above the shop front are three windows coupled by the tile framing with six-light casement windows and four-light fanlights.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has in the second storey two windows of the same type.
The extension on the left has in the FRONT FACADE from bottom to top three windows with respectively a window of which the glazing bars have been removed, a six-light casement window and a nine-light casement window with six-light fanlight.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE has successively a door finished with a lintel, a six-light casement window and a nine-light casement window with six-light fanlight. The windows in the extension are finished with a roller shutter. The INTERIOR is, apart from the simple wooden stair rail and the tiling of two toilets, almost entirely modernised.
