Omschrijving
Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
CAFE "De Tempelier" and two UPPER DWELLINGS (now let as rooms), built in 1902 for Mr. M. Wijers to a design in transitional architecture by architect P.G. Buskens. In the building, stylistic features of neo-renaissance, Art Nouveau and Berlage style have been applied side by side. New materials were also used. The flat facades meet at a chamfered and tapering corner. The architectural practice of architect Buskens was located at number 97 until he moved to Rotterdam in 1915.
The building is situated on the boundary of the old city centre and the 19th-century extension, and is located at the kinked end of the continuous southern facade wall of the Molenstraat. The widened square-like area of the Molenstraat created by this bend in the street facade is visually closed off by this corner building.
Description
Corner building of four storeys on an approximately rectangular ground plan. A short and a long street facade meet at a chamfered and architecturally strongly emphasised corner. The roof truss structure is partly hidden behind gable tops and decorative balustrades. On the long side of the building, a roof section covered with shingles is visible, draining via a gutter on worked corbels. The roof section contains three wooden roof dormers, each consisting of a multi-paned sash window, a carved frame and a cat-slide roof. The irregularly subdivided FACADES are built in red wire-cut brick and laid in English bond. The horizontal articulation of the facades consists of a stone plinth, bands of white stucco in the first storey and bands of glazed green brick halfway between the second and third storeys. The green bands of the second and third storeys are connected in three places by a narrow vertical strip with tiles in the colours red, orange, green, yellow and blue. The plinth, the stone window sills in the first storey, as well as the white-painted lintels, birth stones, closing stones and corbel stones are in some places decorated with ornaments and motifs in Art Nouveau style.
The chamfered corner tapers in height. The flowing transition to an increasingly narrow chamfer was achieved by step-wise applied corner blocks. The corner is accentuated by the entrance to the cafe, the balcony with masonry balustrade and substantial corbel stones, and the closing gable tops with bands of green brick. A tile tableau with the inscription "CAFE" is hidden behind the lightbox attached to the balcony.
The facade openings in the first storey have arched closings: horseshoe arches for the large cafe windows and segmental arches for the entrances. The composite cafe windows with leaded glass are not original. The wooden doors of the cafe (at the corner) and the upper dwellings (at the far left and far right) are executed in Art Nouveau style. The wrought iron door grilles have a whiplash motif. The second and third storeys have narrow and wide sash windows in a single and double variant. The window openings are closed by a worked lintel on corner blocks or by a relieving arch with birth stones. Most of the original leaded glass has been lost. Some fanlights have a simple leaded glass frame with butterfly or sun motif. The long facade side has between two windows and the gutter a tile tableau in the colours red, orange, green, yellow and blue (stylised landscape?). The gable tops of the fourth storey are flanked by decorative masonry balustrades and closed by a stepped frieze of white plasterwork with a profiled cornice. The gable top of number 93 is provided with a tall double shutter, a hoist beam and a pan-tiled covering with an ornamental finial. The double gable top of number 97 has on the short facade side a wide window with four coupled segmental arch windows and mullions.
In the cafe interior, hardly any original elements are preserved. The former living room of the first proprietor has been added to the cafe: the raised section at the back. The interiors of the upper dwellings are simply executed and modified in some respects. The spatial layout is virtually intact.
Evaluation
CAFE "De Tempelier" with two UPPER DWELLINGS from 1902.
- Of architectural-historical value as a good example of a building in transitional architecture from the beginning of the twentieth century with stylistic features of neo-renaissance, Art Nouveau and Berlage style. The building stands out for high-quality aesthetic qualities of its exterior design: fine corner solution, careful detailing, exceptional use of colour and materials. With the exception of some windows, the exterior has been well preserved. The building is a representative example of the work of the young architect P.G. Buskens that he realised in Nijmegen before his move to Rotterdam in 1915.
- Of urban planning value due to its striking location as a corner building at the end of the widening Molenstraat. The building closes off this widened square-like area with its long facade side. The building also marks the transition from the old centre to the 19th-century extension. Cafe "De Tempelier" is therefore of special significance for the appearance of this part of the city.
