Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MONUMENT to Mgr. F. Hamer from 1902 with statue created by sculptor BART VAN HOVE (1850-1914). The monument honours the missionary bishop Ferdinand Hamer (1840-1900), born in Nijmegen, who fell in the Chinese Boxer Rebellion of 1900, together with his fellow priests Jaspers, Zijlmans and Dobbe. Hamer went to Mongolia as a Missionary of Scheut in 1865. The statue now stands at the head of the Bisschop Hamerstraat facing the Keizer Karelplein, in the axis of the central tree-lined median. Until 1949 the statue stood a stone's throw from the bishop's birthplace (Molenstraat 122) at the head of the Verlengde Molenstraat. This street was renamed Bisschop Hamerstraat upon the placement of the statue. The Dutch sculptor BART VAN HOVE received his training in The Hague and subsequently in Antwerp, Paris and Italy. He created many monuments, including that of Jan van Schaffelaar in Barneveld. Furthermore, relief sculptures from his hand are to be found on, among other places, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Description
The MONUMENT consists of a bronze statue 290 cm high, on a higher and heavily substantial, richly executed base of Namur stone 383 cm high. The base is rectangular and tapers towards the top. The base is constructed from different profiled zones, some rusticated and in rustic blocks, furthermore furnished with decorated mouldings. On the front of the base a palm frond is depicted, the attribute of martyrs, with the text 'Ik blijf, gaat mijn kinderen'. On the other sides, within cartouches, are the names of the other martyrs with birth date and birthplace and the place and date of death. The dates of death are always indicated with a cross adorned with crossed palm fronds to indicate that it concerns a martyr's death. In the upper high section of the base, on the front surface are the bishop's name with his birth and death dates. Furthermore the text: 'De Nederlandse martelaren/ van chin.Mongolie/gehuldigd door het vaderland/28 september 1902'. On the three other sides are the three bronze portrait reliefs of the fellow missionaries, all with cap and beard.
The statue shows Hamer standing, a stern figure leaning slightly forward, gazing majestically down at the viewer. He is clothed in bishop's vestments and wears a long curled beard. In his left hand he holds a cross before his breast, with his right hand he urges his missionaries to flee from the 'Chinese Boxer Rebellion'. At the feet of the bishop is cast the bishop's coat of arms.
