Inleiding.
De voormalige militaire MANEGE uit 1900 is gebouwd in Neo-Renaissance bouwstijl naar ontwerp van de Eerst Aanwezend Ingenieur (EAI) kapitein M. Onnen. Zij is gelegen aan de rand van het centrum van de stad, nabij de stadsomwalling. Zij is gebouwd voor de cavalerie van het garnizoen Den Bosch en diende als vervanging van de Oude Rijloods aan het Kruisbroeders-kerkhof. Vergelijkbare loodsen stonden ook elders in het land bijvoorbeeld in Leeuwarden. In later tijd zijn andere functies in het gebouw onder gebracht, waaronder een sport- en feestzaal en een schoolgebouw.
Omschrijving.
De eenlaags manege op rechthoekig grondplan meet 44 bij 20 meter en is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen. Zij heeft een zadeldak, belegd met bitumen als vervanging voor de oorspronkelijke blauwe kruispannen. Het gebouw is negen traveeën lang en drie breed. De traveeën in de langsgevel worden van elkaar gescheiden door lisenen en op de hoeken zijn gemetselde pilasters met verdiepte velden aangebracht. Beide zijn voorzien van profielstenen. Elk travee is voorzien van een rechtgesloten venster met hardstenen onderdorpel en dito aanzet- en sluitstenen. De ramen hebben een driedeling met zesruits schuiframen, geflankeerd door halve zesruits ramen. De westgevel heeft in de middentravee een toegangspoort. De oostgevel heeft een eenlaags aanbouw uit later tijd, waarvoor vijf vensters zijn gewijzigd. De daklijst rust op klossen. Het pand heeft een gemetselde plint rondom. Beide eindgevels hebben een segmentbooglijst. De kopgevel heeft een gestucte deuromlijsting met daarboven een gepaard boogvenster, omsloten door een gemetselde rondboog. De boogvensters zijn voorzien van rechtgesloten zesruits schuiframen en blinde boogtrommels met polychrome tegels. Aan beide zijden van de toegang zijn vergelijkbare vensters aangebracht. Onder de vensters zijn luiken aangebracht, die toegang gaven tot de bergplaatsen. Ook de drie traveeën van de achtergevel zijn voorzien van vergelijkbare gepaarde rondboogvensters, met blinde boogtrommels in de middelste travee. De ramen zijn voorzien van een roedenverdeling. In het interieur zijn de bergplaatsen, de officiersruimten en de tribunes verwijderd. Verder is het interieur ongewijzigd. De kap bestaat uit een beschot van kraaldelen, gedragen door acht ijzeren Polonceau-spanten.
Waardering.
De voormalige manege is van algemeen belang. Zij heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als herinnering aan het militair verleden van de vestingstad 's Hertogenbosch en goed voorbeeld van het type militaire rijloods. The former military RIDING SCHOOL from 1900 was built in Neo-Renaissance architectural style to the design of the First Present Engineer (EAI) Captain M. Onnen. It is situated on the edge of the town centre of Den Bosch, near the town walls. It was built for the cavalry of the Den Bosch garrison and served as a replacement for the Old Riding School at the Kruisbroeders churchyard. Similar riding schools also stood elsewhere in the country, for example in Leeuwarden. In later times other functions were housed in the building, including a sports and banqueting hall and a school building.
Description.
The single-storey riding school on a rectangular ground plan measures 44 by 20 metres and is constructed of machine-made brick. It has a gabled roof, covered with bitumen as a replacement for the original blue roof tiles. The building is nine bays long and three bays wide. The bays in the long elevation are separated from each other by pilaster strips and on the corners machine-made pilasters with recessed panels have been built. Both are provided with moulded stones. Each bay is provided with a rectangular window with stone sill and stone jambs and corner stones. The frames have three divisions with six-pane sash windows, flanked by half six-pane windows. The west elevation has an entrance door in the central bay. The east elevation has a single-storey lean-to addition from a later period, for which five windows have been altered. The eaves cornice rests on consoles. The building has a brick plinth all around. Both end elevations have a segmental arch cornice. The gable has a stuccoed door surround with a paired arched window above it, enclosed by a brick round arch. The arched windows are provided with rectangular six-pane sash windows and blind arch drums with polychrome tiles. Similar windows are arranged on both sides of the entrance. Below the windows are shutters, which gave access to the storage areas. The three bays of the rear elevation are also provided with similar paired round-arched windows, with blind arch drums in the middle bay. The windows are provided with glazing bars. In the interior the storage areas, officers' rooms and galleries have been removed. The interior is otherwise unaltered. The roof structure consists of beadboard sections, supported by eight iron Polonceau roof trusses.
Valuation.
The former riding school is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a reminder of the military past of the fortified town of 's Hertogenbosch and is a fine example of the type of military riding school. It has architectural-historical value as an exponent of Neo-Renaissance building design and because of its original design.
