Inleiding.
Hardhouten vloeren in tekenlokalen.

Description
Complex Hekellaan (Complex component 2 and 3)
Introduction.
The CHEMISTRY CLASSROOM of the former Royal H.B.S. in 's-Hertogenbosch is located on the northeastern corner of the main building of the HBS, to which it is connected via a low gateway. In 1908 the chemistry classrooms in the main building of the HBS were taken into use as ordinary teaching rooms and the premises for chemistry education found a new home behind the main building. The chemistry classroom was also designed by Government Architect J.A. Vrijman.
The chemistry classroom displays sober design in a Traditional-Craftsman formal language. In 1929 a heating basement was constructed beneath the chemistry classroom. Otherwise the building remained largely unaltered.
The GYMNASIUM annex CARETAKER'S DWELLING is located to the northwest of the main building of the Royal HBS, on the southern bank of the Dieze. This building was erected simultaneously with the main building, in 1903-1904, to the design of J.A. Vrijman, Government Architect for Educational Buildings. The gymnasium/caretaker's dwelling shows a more sober interpretation of the Neo-Renaissance formal language of the main building. In 1951 the gymnasium was extended on the west side with a single-storey lean-to roof addition falling outside the protection.
Description.
The partly cellared chemistry classroom has a roughly rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey beneath a flat roof. The facades are executed in brick with a hardstone cornice. The elongated western facade comprises ten bays. The classrooms are provided with tall T-windows with rear-pane fanlights. The fifth and sixth bays from the left project slightly from the facade plane: on the left here is the entrance to the chemistry classroom. This consists of a double-glazed door with twelve-pane fanlight, preceded by a hardstone step. To the right of this a broad three-light window, the fanlights of which are provided with fine glazing bars. In the fourth bay, which projects even more strongly from the facade plane, likewise a three-light window with fine glazing bars in the fanlights.
The northern, eastern and southern facades of the chemistry classroom are without windows.
The two-storey gymnasium/caretaker's dwelling has a roughly L-shaped floor plan. The building has a gymnasium with rectangular floor plan, with a drawing room above it. Gabled roof, covered with slates. The narrower, lower perpendicular addition for the caretaker's dwelling, partly single-, partly two-storey, likewise has a rectangular floor plan. Gabled roof, covered with slates. Broad roof dormer with five four-pane windows. The facades are constructed in brick with natural stone drip mouldings and cornices. Wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. In the centre of the south facade, immediately to the left of the addition for the caretaker's dwelling, the entrance to the gymnasium. At the height of the corridors against the south facade narrow single-pane windows beneath relieving arches: at the height of the stairwell these follow the stair in an ascending line. Far right the caretaker's dwelling. T-windows with three-pane fanlights beneath relieving arches and small basement windows.
The eastern facade of the caretaker's dwelling has far right an entrance section, consisting of a wooden panelled door with fanlight beneath relieving arch. To the left, adjoining the door a window with six-pane fanlight. Far left at the height of the living room a double-glazed garden door with three-pane fanlight and hardstone step.
Right the gable end of the gymnasium: in this to the left remains of a former addition, with to the right of this a two-pane toilet window. Above this a T-window with three-pane fanlight beneath relieving arch. Right, at the height of the hall a large six-part window with two-pane panes beneath relieving arch.
At the height of the drawing room four- and six-pane windows with three-pane fanlights beneath relieving arches. Steel frames. The leftmost window altered. The northern facade has on the ground floor tall rear-pane windows with steel frames. On the upper storey four-pane T-windows with three-pane fanlights.
The windowless western gable end is partly concealed on the ground floor by a single-storey addition from 1951. Above this, far right an extension for toilet blocks in the stairwell with slotted windows beneath herringbone arch.
The interior of the gymnasium/drawing room with caretaker's dwelling still largely shows the original layout. Corridor/stairwell against the southern side of the building. On the north side on the ground floor the gymnasium, on the upper storey three drawing rooms. The caretaker's dwelling has on the ground floor on the south side the living room. To the north of this the kitchen, opening onto the corridor with stairs. Three bedrooms on the upper storey.
A large number of elements of the original interior remain. In the caretaker's dwelling wooden floors and panel wainscotting. In the stairwell of the gymnasium a hardstone stair with wrought-iron balustrade, multicoloured tile floor. Hardwood floors in drawing rooms. In the drawing room an open roof truss with improved Dutch collar ties and iron tension rods.
