Inleiding.
Aan de Hekellaan gelegen GEDENKTEKEN, vervaardigd in 1938 door architect Co Brandes en beeldhouwer Albert Termote in een stijl die invloeden vertoont van het Expressionisme. De bronzen plaquette werd uitgevoerd door de 'Witmetaalfabriek' te Leiden. Het gedenkteken is opgenomen in het verhoogd gelegen middendeel van een dubbelarmige trap. Deze trap leidt naar een bordes pal bovenop een voormalig rondeel aan de zuidzijde van de vroegere Bossche stadswal, die met de overige rondelen, bastions en voorliggende gracht van rijkswege is beschermd.
De Bossche burgerij nam het initiatief voor het gedenkteken ter ere en nagedachtenis van Henri Bakker (1911-1936), de eerste piloot in de Nederlandse luchtmacht.
Omschrijving.
Het object is symmetrisch van opzet en bestaat uit diverse blokken Duitse Muschelkalksteen van uiteenlopende grootte die een in het midden geplaatste bronzen plaquette omlijsten. Deze plaquette wordt omzoomd met een geprofileerde lijst met versneden hoeken aan de onderzijde en toont in licht haut-reliëf een vliegende adelaar die met zijn klauwen een medaillon met het portret van Henri Bakker vasthoudt. Signatuur rechtsonder '1938 A. TERMOTE'. De kalksteenblokken vormen aan de voet van het gedenkteken een breed uitwaaierende basis en sluiten de bovenzijde af met een strook die boven het belendende muurwerk uitsteekt. Teksten in reliëf: 'DE BURGERIJ / DEZER STAD AAN HAREN LUCHT- / VAARTPIONIER / 1911 / HENRI BAKKER / 1936 / EERSTE PILOOT VAN HET NEDERL. LEGER'. Op de basis is linksonder ingebeiteld: 'CO BRANDES / ARCH.' en rechtsonder 'ALBERT TERMOTE / SCULPT.'.
Waardering.
Het gedenkteken is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere herinnering aan de begindagen van de Nederlandse luchtmacht en de ontwikkelingen in de luchtvaart tijdens het Interbellum. Daarnaast als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale ontwikkeling. Het object heeft kunsthistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de zorgvuldige detaillering. Het object is gaaf bewaard gebleven. Het object is vrij zeldzaam wegens het gebruik van de Duitse Muschelkalksteen en is als gedenkteken zeldzaam binnen het oeuvre van de landelijk bekende architect Brandes.

Introduction.
Located at the Hekellaan a MEMORIAL, created in 1938 by architect Co Brandes and sculptor Albert Termote in a style showing influences of Expressionism. The bronze plaquette was executed by the 'Witmetaalfabriek' in Leiden. The memorial is set into the raised central section of a double-flight staircase. This staircase leads to a landing directly above a former roundel on the south side of the former Den Bosch city wall, which, together with the other roundels, bastions and the ditch in front, is protected by the state.
The burghers of Den Bosch took the initiative for the memorial in honour and memory of Henri Bakker (1911-1936), the first pilot in the Dutch air force.
Description.
The object is symmetrically arranged and consists of various blocks of German Muschelkalk limestone of varying size which frame a bronze plaquette positioned in the centre. This plaquette is bordered with a moulded list with cut corners at the bottom and shows in light haut-relief a flying eagle which holds in its talons a medallion with the portrait of Henri Bakker. Signature lower right '1938 A. TERMOTE'. The limestone blocks form at the foot of the memorial a broad spreading base and close the top with a strip that projects above the adjacent masonry. Texts in relief: 'DE BURGERIJ / DEZER STAD AAN HAREN LUCHT- / VAARTPIONIER / 1911 / HENRI BAKKER / 1936 / EERSTE PILOOT VAN HET NEDERL. LEGER'. On the base are chiselled lower left: 'CO BRANDES / ARCH.' and lower right 'ALBERT TERMOTE / SCULPT.'.
Valuation.
The memorial is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values as a remarkable commemoration of the beginning days of the Dutch air force and the developments in aviation during the Interwar period.
