Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The OFFICE BUILDING of Machinefabriek Grasso with an extension at the rear and ACCESS GATE was built in 1912 in Transitional architecture to a design by architect F.C. de Beer. It is located in the centre of the factory site and faces the city with its front facade. In the front facade of the front building, a stained-glass window was installed in 1958 in the multi-part round-arched window of the first floor, created by the Bossche glazier M. de Leeuw, presented by the staff on the company's hundredth anniversary.
Description.
The three-storey office building on a square ground plan is built of brick. It has a hipped roof, laid with smothered improved Dutch tiles, with a slightly arched wooden roof dormer on the north, east and south sides. From the roof apex protrudes a ventilation pipe with grilles under hipped roof. The central pavilion of the front facade is comparable to the facades of the factory halls. It contains an entrance section with double wooden panel door in a natural stone surround and slightly arched frieze with "ADMINISTRATIE" carved into it. The long vertical windows continue above the frieze, extend over the storeys above and end in round arches. The arched hardstone gabled top projects above the roof edge and is flanked by hardstone pinnacles. The facade surfaces on both sides of the central pavilion are also slightly projecting and have a profiled and sloping gabled top. The ground floor windows have T-sash windows under fanlights with glazing bars. On the first floor, four-pane sash windows are installed. On the second floor, round windows are placed with cast-iron frames. The two western bays of both side facades have a round-arched gable termination. In the north facade on the ground floor, a porter's bay window was later inserted in the window. The central hall spans two storeys and has a barrel vault on the first floor. The stuccoed walls are divided into fields, which on the first floor are separated from each other by pilasters and end in stuccoed round arches. On the first floor, between the pilasters, straight-sided wall openings are provided, which afford a view into the adjacent offices. The entrance on the ground floor has a three-part round-arched opening, which provides access to the stairwell, consisting of a single flight of stairs that splits into two flights on the first floor and ends on the first floor in a landing with a bridge to the meeting room. The stairs have a wrought-iron balustrade with brass handrail. On the intermediate floor stands a bust of W. Grasso, presented by the staff on the company's fiftieth anniversary in 1908. The office building has a semi-basement two-storey extension at the rear of five bays under a flat roof. Each bay has a slightly arched gable recess, which on the ground floor encloses a paired round-arched window with iron frame with glazing bars from a later period. On the cellar storey, a low straight-sided window is installed with iron frame with glazing bars. On the first floor, T-sash windows are installed under three-pane fanlights. In the second bay from the street side, a semicircular bay window is placed on the first floor. The layout of the ground floor and cellar storey have remained largely intact. That of the first floor has been altered.
In the extension of this building section there is a single-storey outbuilding twelve bays long, which houses workshops. After 1950 a storey under a flat roof was built measuring nine bays long. The last three bays are provided with a flat roof with sheds. Each bay has three small, narrow and high-placed windows on the ground floor of the north facade. The layout of the south facade has been altered at a later time. The layout of the interior of the ground floor has remained largely intact. Between the office building and the factory halls are two double wrought-iron gates between brick pillars with hardstone base and hardstone coping plate with ornamental cresting.
Valuation.
The office building with extension at the rear and access gate from 1912 is of general interest and has ensemble value because of its coherence with the other components of the complex. It has cultural-historical value as an example of the type of large industrial machine factory and is recognizable as such by its location, scale and architecture. It played a pioneering role in the industrialisation of the country and can be regarded as a crystallisation point for the economic, social and urban development of the city of 's-Hertogenbosch in the first half of the twentieth century. It has commemorative value because of the bullet holes in the walls, which refer to the closing days of the Second World War. It has architectural-historical value because of the harmonious design of the front facade and the richly detailed hall and as an example of Transitional architecture. Despite the alterations that have taken place over time, it has been preserved intact and recognizable. It is moreover a rare example of the formerly common type of industrial machine factory.
