Inleiding.

Introduction.

The former FLOUR MILL from 1909 was built for Mr H. Bruyelle, designed by architect F.C. de Beer in Traditional-Craftsman style. It is situated on the eastern point of the business site, which is located outside the nineteenth-century centre of 's-Hertogenbosch and along the Dieze, in the northern corner of the Het Zand neighbourhood, where much industrial activity has settled. Since 1948 the factory building has been part of the animal feed business Koudijs, which has been substantially expanded over time, whereby the dock along the Dieze has been filled in.

The mill and warehouse are now used for storage, the laundry is used as office space and the silos are out of use. A tile tableau from 1950, which is located in the stairwell of the adjacent building, provides information about the size and appearance of the original complex.

Description.

The flour mill was built on a U-shaped ground plan, with the stairwell in the angle, leading up to the water tower, which projects above the building. At a later date the courtyard was also built on, giving the building a square ground plan. In the brick east wing, which runs parallel to the Dieze, the warehouse and laundry were housed, in the brick south wing was the mill, while the concrete silo section forms the north wing. All wings as well as the built-on courtyard have a flat roof. Both the east and south wing have five storeys and are seven bays long and four wide. The bays are separated from each other by pilasters. Each bay encloses on each floor a paired window under double segmental arch, filled with rectangular-frame windows with glazing bars. On the top storey, however, the segmental arches are absent. On the ground floor, each bay comprises a single rectangular-frame window with windows in glazing bars. The third bay in the east facade is, as is the second in the south facade, provided on each storey with loading doors. The wooden floors in the east and south wing are supported by iron bearing beams, which in turn rest on round cast-iron columns with slightly moulded capitals. The upper storey, however, has wooden corner posts, which support the wooden roof truss structure. The north wing, consisting of the concrete silo section, is of the same height as the two other wings and has three rows of four silo chambers, which on the ground floor lead into rectangular funnels. Two of the three rows of funnels have been removed. The upper storey consists of a large room, with in the floor manholes giving access to the silo chambers. The ceiling is supported by concrete columns, which support a concrete roof truss structure. The stairwell, leading up to the square water tower is built of brick and has a concrete stair and concrete water reservoir for the sprinkler installation. The tower has a hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. In the north and south facade, three high rectangular-frame windows are installed, with iron glazing bars. Above this a round window with iron frame has been placed. A similar window is installed in the other facades. Along the stairwell runs a hoist shaft, with shutters in each floor. In the space under the water reservoir, the associated wooden winch is installed.

Valuation.

The flour mill is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an illustrative example of the modern type of flour mill for its time, with the characteristic location, scale and design of this type. It has architectural-historical value as an example of sober and purposeful factory architecture and because of the place the building occupies in the versatile oeuvre of architect F.C. de Beer. The building has construction-historical value because of the materials used, in particular the cast-iron columns, the concrete silos and the concrete water reservoir. It has ensemble value because of its recognizable functional coherence with the neighbourhood and as a defining visual element within it. It is rare as an example of the formerly common type of modernizing flour mill and is moreover well preserved.
