The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

A sunken GARDEN in the New Architectural garden style, laid out after a design by garden architect D.F. Tersteeg (1876-1942), who also developed the urban planning scheme for the surrounding area. The rectangular garden serves as a forecourt to the Wantijpark situated to the southeast of it. Both the public park Wantijpark, laid out in a mixed garden style, and the adjoining Wantijplantsoen were laid out in the period 1933-1936 as a public works project.

Description

The rectangular garden with mortared walls and ordered beds is arranged symmetrically with the axis of symmetry in line with Parklaan. The avenue terminates in the southeast in a round rose bed that directly borders the garden. From the street three mortared stairs lead down to the sunken garden. In the axis lies a rectangular water feature with three interconnected basins with chamfered corners. The basins differ in height from one another and have mortared surrounding walls with a hardstone edge. The water feature is flanked with terraces and shrub planting. In the lawn on either side of the water feature is a square border with paving all around. Along the short sides of the garden stand a total of four mortared benches with rounded backrests and wooden seats. Various weeping willows stand on the lawn, and different monumental trees stand along the margins of the lawn.

Valuation

The early twentieth-century garden is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, garden-architectural, urban planning and ensemble value.

- The garden is of cultural-historical importance as a good example of a garden in the New Architectural garden style, which is characteristic of the interwar period, and as part of a public works project from this period.

- The garden is of architectural-historical importance because of the qualities of the design and as a representative work from the oeuvre of a leading garden architect.

- The garden has urban planning and ensemble value because of its coherence with Parklaan and Wantijpark with which it has a strong functional and visual relationship and as part of a larger urban planning scheme.

- The garden is also important because of its recognisability and its high degree of integrity.
