Inleiding

Introduction

FARMHOUSE Elijzen, with BARN. The farmhouse was built in the early 20th century on the site of an older one, the barn followed shortly after. The buildings are situated somewhat to the side in the beautifully undulating landscape, at the top of the valley.

The name 'Elijzen' is that of the last inhabitants. Due to the location in a water extraction area, habitation is nowadays undesirable. The building was renovated in 1992 and 1995 to serve as a museum function for the water company.

The farmhouse, like farmhouse Wijlhuizen, lies beautifully in the undulating valley. Around 1817 there was already a farmhouse at both locations. The present farmhouse was rebuilt at the beginning of the century.

Description

The building is plastered and painted white, with the exception of the front facade in fair-faced brickwork. The gabled roof, with half-hipped roof tiles, stands between stepped gables. The roof slopes are fitted with gutters. On the right slope there is a chimney at the front, which is freestanding in the attic. The FRONT FACADE has the entrance on the left with fanlight, to the right of it two windows with shutters. The attic window is slightly arched. The roof has a slight overhang with wind braces. The low, white plastered LEFT GABLE, with black plinth, is blank except for one window with shutter.

The plastered and white painted REAR GABLE, with a black plinth, is a stepped gable, the attic door and small window above it are closed off. The barn doors are presumably replaced by the present ordinary door with small three-pane fanlight. Of the arched manure doors, the right one has an unplastered segmental arch. The gable has some ornamental wall anchors.

The RIGHT SIDE GABLE is now built somewhat higher than was customary in older farmhouses. This allows a side entrance to fit in without the roof slope needing to be raised. The brickwork is plastered and painted white, with black plinth, and has some anchors of older origin at the top. In the middle there is a small four-pane window under an unplastered lintel, to the right of it, right at the top, a very small window with a thief iron. Of the INTERIOR, in the living room, in the middle of the front house, there remains the hearth with a fine fireplace mantel. To the right and left of it there is a small room. Behind the left one lies a small chamber, below which a small cellar under a wooden floor with a trapdoor. The threshing floor contains the only roof truss: a pine collar-tie truss. It is not impossible that it is older than the building and comes from the predecessor. This certainly applies to the door in the right gable. On the threshing floor, in the corner between the side gable and the rear wall of the last-mentioned chamber, there is a narrow, bulging stone trough. The attic is accessible via a trapdoor from the threshing floor and is unboarded.

The BARN, situated to the right behind the farmhouse and substantial in relation to the farmhouse, dates from the first half of the 20th century. This building also has a gabled roof between two stepped gables, fitted with wind braces. The right roof slope bears red newly improved hollow tiles, the left half-hipped roof tiles. The gables executed in fair-faced brickwork in Flemish bond. The side considered as the front facade, facing the same direction as that of the farmhouse, has barn doors opening outward renewed in 1995 and a small window filled in to the left and right of it. A loading door provides access to the attic. Two anchors mark the position of the beam layer: the blind side gables are built up to that height. The rear gable had three – now filled in – doors, between which two higher placed also filled-in windows. The loading hatch for the attic was however preserved. Two anchors mark the attic floor. The left gable has a door on the right, three filled-in windows to the left of it. The right gable had two small doors alternating with three somewhat higher placed windows, also under segmental arches: all of this has been bricked in.

Valuation

FARMHOUSE Elijzen, with BARN, with an early 20th-century character.

- Of architectural-historical significance as an example of agricultural building.

- Together of urban planning value as landscape-important elements in the image of the undulating valley. Both have ensemble value as such.

Around 1817 there was already a farmhouse at both locations. The building gives the impression of essentially still being the old farmhouse. The front facade of the farmhouse and barn point in character to the beginning of the 20th century, but the unplastered front facade stands for a building otherwise plastered, at the corner half-brick incorporated into the side gable. The most obvious explanation would be plastering to hide the traces of the alteration. In fact, the interior teaches that the building was indeed rebuilt at the beginning of the century. In doing so, a design was chosen that makes the building look very much like a dwelling house. The gabled roof between stepped gables, instead of a half-hipped roof, fits with this. The barn doors are also lacking in the rear gable, while the manure doors are still present. But this gable has been altered: a loading door for the attic and a window above it are closed off, it is possible that barn doors have also disappeared this way. The slightly arched attic window in the front facade also emphasizes that the building has more the character of a dwelling house than of a farmhouse, in which case a loading hatch would be more expected.

The remarkable stone block on the threshing floor is located in the corner between the side gable and the rear wall of the last-mentioned chamber. It is an inverted quarter cone, slightly bulging and with a curved top edge, beginning somewhat above the floor. Its function and origin are unknown. For a drinking trough the top would be placed rather high. Since the outer gable is plastered, it is now not possible to determine whether an opening corresponds to this location on the outside. It presumably comes from the predecessor of the farmhouse.
