Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Single-storey WATER PUMPING STATION from 1898, beneath a gently sloping gabled roof. The design, typical for industrial buildings, is conservatively conceived in its principal layout for that period, but in details - such as the ornamental wall anchors - modern. The originally unpainted building is now painted white.
The building is situated in the pleasantly undulating landscape, together with a few outbuildings, somewhat concealed in a more deeply excavated section of the valley.
Description
The fairly substantial WATER PUMPING STATION, beneath a gently sloping gabled roof, fits the usual image of industrial buildings from that time and is in its principal layout and much of the detailing quite traditional, although the natural stone elements at the top of the spout gables and the ornamental wall anchors already tend towards Art Nouveau. These anchors are literally ornamental anchors: they have no structural significance. The now white-painted masonry was originally unpainted.
The end gable on the side of the site access, the right gable, functions as the front facade. Both END GABLES are spout gables with a climbing tooth moulding and at the top a fine angular ornamental element, possibly of natural stone, which seems to point forward to Art Deco. The shoulders are set in stepped fashion. The right gable is the most visible; on top stands a forged weathervane, consisting of a rotating arrow on a horizontal cross with four arms naming the cardinal directions. The large windows have steel frames and have a segmental arch-shaped top. The small windows above them differ in both end gables. The left gable has a circular window, the right one three slender windows under segmental arches. The central one is taller and wider. They are linked by a shared window sill. The LONG FACADES have a block tooth moulding. The seven window bays are marked by substantial recesses under segmental arches, in which the large windows have steel frames with a segmental arch-shaped top. The entrance is located in the front facade in the central recess, and fits itself through the fanlight into the rhythm of the windows. In the rear facade the windows in the right two recesses are blocked off.
In the hall stand large PURIFICATION BOILERS, in which the pumped groundwater is purified into drinking water. The oldest boilers are still riveted, the newer ones welded. The left part of the building is divided into office rooms. In the building a black marble commemorative plaque has been mounted, the text engraved in golden letters reading: "Waterleiding te Velp./ Built by the Industriëele Maatschappij./ in Amsterdam./ Directors:/ G.W. v. Barneveld Kooy Jr. Amsterdam./ D.J.v.d. Honert. Baarn./ Engineer:/ H.P.N. Halbertsma, 's Gravenhage./ Opened/ on the 14th February 1899/ by the Noble and Honourable Mister/ Mr A.H. Brandt./ Mayor of the Municipality of Rheden."
Appreciation
WATER PUMPING STATION from 1898.
- Of architectural-historical importance as a functional industrial building with added traditional decorative elements such as a climbing arch frieze and ornamental wall anchors tending towards Art Nouveau. The building plays as the principal pumping station a central role in the complex of industrial buildings for water extraction, which illustrates the architectural development of industrial construction at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century.
- The water pumping station is a well-preserved monument of industrial enterprise and technology from 1898 and still contains various interesting interior components that illustrate the development of this industrial sector.
- It moreover plays a role in the appearance of the complex and, in broader context, of the valley. As such it has ensemble value.
Cultural-historical description
The steam engines, which originally stood in the main building to pump the water, have disappeared, but can still be seen in an old interior photograph, which hangs in the building. This included a tall chimney, positioned to the left centre beside the building; this was demolished in 1938 after switching from steam power to gas.
The forged weathervane on the top of the right side gable consists of a rotating arrow on a horizontal cross with four arms naming the cardinal directions.
