Inleiding

Introduction

Former WAREHOUSE 'Java', built in 1907 in a mixed form of Eclectic, Neo-Romanesque style and Transitional architecture, forming part of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia'. The L-shaped building is connected to the neighbouring warehouse Hollandia I (which has been partly shortened for this purpose) by an intermediate section. Behind this is a dead-end interior alley. The warehouse forms part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaan riverbanks in which food, oil and timber industries predominated and water transport was an essential locational requirement.

Description

Warehouse erected on an L-shaped ground plan with five storeys, in red/grey brickwork in cross-bond under a flat roof covered with mastic and gravel. The vertical articulation consists of pilasters, with spandrels between them closed by segmental arches. The horizontal articulation consists of drip mouldings, one running above the second storey and one alternating above the third and fourth storey. At the corners of the lines hardstone blocks. Along the roof edge a brick-built block frieze. The windows have an iron glazing bar pattern.

The asymmetrical front facade (S) has six bays, the right two projecting and crowned by a balustrade. On the ground storey and first floor arched twelve-pane windows (in the middle two bays of the ground floor subsequently enlarged) and in the second bay, both on the left and right, two pairs of (renewed) loading doors running through over the storey.

On the second and third floors arched twelve-pane segmental arch windows (in the second and third bay subsequently widened), on the fourth floor arched sixteen-pane windows. Above the side risalit an open semicircular arch balustrade, at the corners block piers, with ridge pieces. The left side facade (W) has ten bays articulated as the front facade, but with fewer and different windows. Of the first and the last two bays the spandrels in the upper two storeys are blank. Also blank are the first two bays (from the left) on the third storey. On the ground storey in the first through fifth bay from the left a large arched thirty-pane window. The windows on the floors (originally mostly twelve-pane) are likewise arched but smaller. The rear facade (N) has three bays, articulated as the front facade, with non-staggered drip mouldings above the second and third storey. The facade facing the interior street originally had a similar articulation. In the interior an armed concrete construction of monolithic square piers, chamfered consoles and beams which carry the cast floor slabs with still visible imprints of the formwork.

Valuation

The former warehouse 'Java' dating from 1907 is of general importance for reasons of architectural and cultural historical value as a historico-functional component of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia' and as a characteristic and largely well-preserved example of an early twentieth-century industrial building serving the food processing industry in a design characteristic for the building period and function whereby neo-romanesque elements are combined with contemporary motifs and building techniques. Also of great constructive importance as an early example of the application of a monolithic armed concrete construction. Furthermore of industrial-archaeological value as an image-determining component of the industrial landscape along the Zaan in which the transition from wind to steam power is marked by extensive warehouses and mills. Also of importance for the development history of industry in North Holland, in particular the grain processing industry in the Zaanstreek region.
