Inleiding

Introduction

Former WAREHOUSE 'Bassein', built in 1898 in Transitional architecture with Neo-Romanesque elements, forming part of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia'. Originally the building had three storeys under a hipped roof with a coping roof. In 1905 the building was raised by one storey in the same style and provided with a flat roof. In 1909 the building was extended with a rectangular extension against the eastern part of the rear facade. The left side facade (W) shows the old forms of the warehouse from 1898. The warehouse forms part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaan riverbank and more specifically of the series of (rice) mills in Wormer. Bassein is built against 'Hollandia I' and connected to 'Saigon' by an intermediate section. On the rear side 'Hollandia II' is wedged in.

Description

Warehouse erected on an L-shaped ground plan in red/grey brickwork in cross-bond with four storeys under a flat roof covered with mastic and gravel. In the brickwork yellow facing bricks, closure and header bricks. The broad front facade (S) facing the Zaan contains seven window bays in spandrels. The middle bay executed as a risalit projects above the roof line with an attic provided with a ridge piece, flanked by two projecting, corbel-supported, brick piers with pyramidal coping stones. At the corners similar projecting piers in relief, but lower. Between the corner piers and those of the attic a brick-built frieze. The outer window bays are flanked by pilasters extending over four storeys, and contain as does the central risalit loading doors on the ground storey. The intermediate window bays are connected at the top in pairs by broad brick-built segmental arches.

Window bays two, three, five and six are connected to each other besides by the segmental arch by a brick-built frieze above the second storey. The corner pilasters run through to the roof line, the other pilasters to the brick-built frieze. In the central risalit are positioned one above the other four pairs of double, arched, (renewed) loading doors under segmental arches. At the top the name 'BASSEIN' in relief. In the first storey twelve- and twenty-pane windows, in the second storey twelve-pane, in the third storey twelve-pane in the outer window bays and fifteen-pane in the others and in the fourth storey twenty-five-pane in the outer window bays and twenty-pane in the others. The left side facade (W) is partially, up to the 1905 extension, plastered, with blank windows and drip mouldings.

The right side facade (E) has the same arrangement as the left; only the building extends further to the rear and there are no blank windows in the plasterwork. The rear of the extension comprises four window bays with pilasters in the centre and at the corners and a brick-built frieze. The first two storeys have arched twenty-pane windows, the third and fourth likewise twelve-pane windows. The fourth bay has (new) doors on the ground storey. The projecting roof edge has brick-built corner terminations.

The internal construction consists of round cast-iron columns with capitals and attached quarter-hollow consoles and I-beams. Wooden floor joists rest upon these. The columns, tapering per storey, are on the upper storey higher and fewer in number.

Valuation

Former warehouse 'Bassein' dating from 1898 and raised in 1905, of general importance for reasons of architectural and cultural historical value as a historico-functional component of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia' and as a characteristic and largely well-preserved example of a large-scale storage building for mechanical rice milling. Furthermore of great ensemble value for the historico-functional and spatial coherence with the neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
