Inleiding

Introduction

Former WAREHOUSE 'Batavia', built in 1894 in eclecticist-renaissance style, forming part of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia'. The factory building, with its long, representative facade facing the Zaan, is part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaan banks where food, oil and timber industries dominated and water transport was an essential condition for establishment.

Description

Detached warehouse on a rectangular ground plan of 34 x 30 metres, built in red/grey brick in English bond, with two storeys and an attic storey under a hipped roof, covered with aged pantiles and mastic with gravel. At the front three gabled sections with gabled roofs, with spout gables. In the brickwork yellow decorative brick bands, offsets, blocks, closing and bonding stones and wrought-iron wall anchors with S-scrolls. Furthermore in the gable tops diamond motifs in yellow decorative brick. The blocks at the corners of the lists are in sandstone, those at the corners of the offset on the ground floor in hardstone. Along the roof edge runs a profiled drip moulding. In the windows is an iron glazing bar system.

The symmetrical front facade, facing south, has nine bays, whereby the second, fifth and eighth bays project and end in spout gables that break through the roof line. The remaining bays are separated on the storey by pilasters with segmental arch spandrels between them. The pilasters end in a rendered frieze with a double dentil moulding.

On the fairly low ground floor zone over the entire length rounded arch spandrels under a string course with offset and double dentil moulding, broken by the projecting sections. The outermost two projecting sections have on the storey high rounded arch spandrels, the middle one a straight closed spandrel. In the projecting sections on the ground floor (renewed) loading doors. In the other rounded arch spandrels eighteen-pane windows with radial glazing bars in the fanlights. The almost double-height storey has in the spandrels fourteen-pane segmental arch windows, in the projecting section (renewed) loading doors, in the right and centre projecting section with ten-pane fanlight. On the attic storey in the outermost projecting sections arched (renewed) rounded arch glass doors and in the centre projecting section two pairs of straight, double panel doors placed one above the other. Below this the letters 'BATAVIA'.

The left side facade (W), partly obscured from view by warehouse Saigon, has the same articulation as the front facade but with eight bays, the second and seventh bay projecting. The pilasters end in stepped fashion in the rendered frieze with double dentil moulding. The right side facade (E) is in articulation the same as the left and freely located, with on the ground floor rounded arch windows and in the centre bay (renewed) doors.

The rear facade (N) has the same articulation as the front facade also with nine bays, but without projecting sections. On the ground floor in the second and fifth bay doors in the spandrel, in the ninth (new) doors of larger dimensions. On the storey twenty-pane windows (in the eighth bay extended downwards in XXd).

The internal structure on the ground floor consists of round cast-iron columns with open-worked, cast-on brackets above a column ring and I-beams. Upon these lie the wooden floor beams. On the storey the structure is the same but the brackets and beams are placed at a right angle to those on the ground floor. The columns on the storey are higher and more slender than those on the ground floor.

Valuation

Former warehouse 'Batavia' dating from 1894 of general importance due to architectural and cultural historical value as a historically-functional component of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia' and as a largely well-preserved example of a large-scale storage building designed in eclecticist-renaissance style for the purpose of mechanical rice milling, dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. Furthermore of great ensemble value due to the historically-functional and spatial coherence with the neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
