Inleiding

Introduction

Former WAREHOUSE 'Saigon' from 1898, forming part of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia', built in an eclectic architectural manner influenced by Neo-Dutch Renaissance and Transitional architecture. The factory building, with its long, representative facade facing the Zaan, is part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaan banks where food, oil and timber industries dominated and water transport was an essential condition for establishment. N.B. For the middle three bays a loading house stood there which has since been demolished.

Description

Largely detached, on a rectangular ground plan with three storeys built in grey brick in English bond, warehouse under a hipped roof covered with aged pantiles and mastic. The front facade located facing south and facing the Zaan has a gabled section with flattened gabled roof. The flattened hipped roof has a wooden list around the flat roof and wooden drip moulding. Below this in the rendered roof edge quarter-round profile stones. The roof edge of the flattened gabled roof has an iron creste with a weather vane and corner ornaments. In the roof, above the loading doors in the second and eighth bay, two original roof dormers with four-pane windows and drawn-in pointed spires, crowned by an ornament. In the brickwork yellow decorative brick blocks, offsets, bands, closing and bonding stones. The corner blocks in the plinth and the lintels of the loading and unloading doors are of hardstone, the corner blocks on the storey of natural stone. Round about runs a brick plinth with offset. The windows are of iron.

The front facade (S) is vertically articulated by pilasters in nine bays, the middle three in a (pseudo)projecting section with higher built-up spout gable. The pilasters end in a rendered frieze. On the ground floor a series with segmental arch-shaped spandrels with arched eight-pane windows under segmental arches. The ground floor is terminated by a heavy string course with offset and dentil moulding. On the two storeys the colossal pilasters enclose rectangular spandrels with within them segmental arch-shaped spandrels. In the latter-mentioned spandrels respectively loading doors and arched eight-pane windows. In the second building layer a yellow decorative brick offset. In the second, fifth and eighth bay on the ground floor, the first and second storey (new) doors under segmental arches. Also (new) doors on the third storey of the middle bay under subdivided fanlight with on either side two quarter-round windows. Above the arched fanlight, in the top gable, a trapezoidal tableau with the name 'SAIGON'.

The left side facade (W) has the same layout as the front facade, however without windows and spandrels. This layout is repeated on the right side facade (E). The rear facade (N) has nine bays according to similar articulation as the front facade, but on the ground floor with rectangular spandrels and on the storeys no segmental arch-shaped spandrels. The arched iron windows are twelve-pane and have hinged panes. On the ground floor the second, fifth and eighth bay have (renewed) doors. (on the storey the seventh bay has a shutter).

The internal structure on the ground floor consists of round cast-iron columns with open-worked, quarter-hollow cast-on consoles above a column ring and I-beams. Upon these rest the wooden floor beams. The columns taper per storey and are on the upper storey higher and less numerous.

Valuation

Former warehouse 'Saigon' dating from 1898 of general importance due to architectural and cultural historical value as a historically-functional component of the rice mill complex 'Hollandia' and as a characteristic and largely well-preserved example of a large-scale storage building for the purpose of mechanical rice milling, dating from the end of the 19th century. Furthermore of great ensemble value due to the historically-functional and spatial coherence with the neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
