Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Grain WAREHOUSE 'Silo' (also called 'Oslo') in Transitional Architecture built to the design of the Gorter brothers for the firm Gebroeders Laan in 1905 and forming part of the milling complex 'Mercurius'. To the right (E) of the warehouse is the office for the warehouse manager in the same building style and on the rear side (N) the large concrete grain silo, nowadays named 'Lassie'. On the freely situated west side is a discharge tower. The warehouse with its long representative facade facing the river forms part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaanoevers in which food, oil and timber industries dominated and transport by water was an essential location requirement.
N.B. The wooden superstructure and the external installation are of subsidiary importance for the protection.
Description
The large, half-detached warehouse is built in grey/red brick in English bond over five storeys under a flat roof covered with mastic and pebbles. The floor plan is a rectangle with on the west side a rectangular tower extension over six storeys. In the grey/red brick in English bond continuous yellow facing brick decorative bands are incorporated, interrupted in the spandrels, and likewise block and tooth mouldings and voussoirs. On the pilasters are ornamental wall anchors with scroll ornaments. The windows are iron and provided with moulded stone sills.
The front facade (S) is subdivided by pilasters and, in the frieze projecting, pilaster strips into eleven bays with risalients in the third, sixth and ninth bay. The pilaster strips are located on the corners and on either side of the (false) risalients. The side risalients are narrower than the broad central risalent.
The middle bay has loading doors on the lowest two storeys under segmental arches, above that two pairs of round-arched windows coupled by basket arches and on the fifth storey the name 'Silo' in relief. The side risalients have a similar layout but on the fifth floor coupled windows under spandrels. The risalients are terminated by a yellow-red brick decorative moulding with block-shaped decorations, the central bay with two blocks more. The remaining bays have round-arched windows with iron glazing bars on the ground floor. On the upper storeys nine-pane iron windows under segmental arches. The spandrel of the lowest two storeys is terminated by a red-yellow tooth moulding. In the spandrel of the top three storeys, terminated by a sawtooth moulding, three straight two-pane windows. The roof edge has natural stone saddle-back copings. The pilaster strips on the corners are capped with diamond heads, the others with small gabled roofs. The symmetrical left side facade (W) has on either side of the tower-like extension a single bay, the articulation comparable to that of the front facade, but blind. The southern facade of the extension is two window axes wide with below round-arched windows with glazing bars as in the front facade, on the first floor arched twelve-pane windows, on the second floor straight closed twelve-pane windows, on the third floor again arched twelve-pane windows and on the fourth and fifth arched sixteen-pane windows. The northern side facade of the tower extension is identical but on the lower storeys concealed from view by an adjoining structure. The west side of the extension counts three bays with on the storeys loading doors behind iron balustrades in the middle bay, flanked by a bay with an iron round-arched window on the ground floor, above that three storeys with an arched twelve-pane window and on the fourth and fifth storey an arched sixteen-pane window. The right side facade (E) of the warehouse is visible from the second storey upwards and has four blind spandrels, articulated by pilaster strips. The middle two are carried up higher, the outer two are terminated by tooth mouldings.
The rear facade (N) has the same facade articulation as the front but is largely concealed behind the later built-on grain silo.
The internal load-bearing structure consists on the ground floor and first storey of a monolithic concrete skeleton. The upper storeys have tapering iron columns upwards with concrete floors between them. The discharge tower has a pine wood skeleton. The roller doors are iron with asbestos.
Valuation
The warehouse 'Silo/Oslo' dating from 1905 is of general interest due to its architectural and cultural-historical as well as industrial-archaeological and typological value as a historical-functional component of the milling complex 'Mercurius' and as a characteristic and well-preserved example of an early 20th-century large-scale storage building for machine-driven pearl barley milling, erected in architecture characteristic of the building period in which historicizing elements are combined with contemporary motifs. Furthermore of great ensemble value due to the historical-functional and spatial coherence with the neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
