Inleiding
Naar ontwerp van de gebroeders Gorter voor de gortpellerijfirma Gebroeders Laan in 1894 gebouwd graanPAKHUIS 'Donau' als uitbreiding van de stoompellerij in een sobere Overgangsarchitectuur, deel uitmakend van het pellerijcomplex 'Mercurius'. De knik in de voorgevel is ontstaan vanwege het toenmalige dijktracé. Het pakhuis ligt ingeklemd tussen het pakhuis 'Koningsbergen' (1897) en het lage kantoor voor de pakhuischef 'De Kievit' (1911). Het met de representatieve gevel naar de rivier gekeerde pakhuis maakt deel uit van het gevarieerde industrielandschap langs de Zaanoevers waarin voedsel-, olie- en houtindustrie domineerden en het vervoer over water een essentiële vestigingsvoorwaarde was. De drie risalieten van de voorgevel werden oorspronkelijk bekroond door een trapgevel.

Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekige plattegrond met afgeschuinde hoek in grauw bakstenen kruisverband opgetrokken pakhuis van drie bouwlagen, onder een met rode holle pannen gedekt zadeldak waarvan de noklijn dwars op de Zaan staat. In het metselwerk rollagen, sierbanden en blokken van gele verblendsteen. In het muurwerk rozetankers. De vensters zijn van ijzer.
De symmetrische voorgevel (Z), met gepleisterde hoeklisenen en dakrand, is vijf vensterassen breed. Op de begane grond en de eerste verdieping, twee deuren tussen drie ijzeren achtruitsvensters met hardstenen lekdorpels onder segmentbogen. Op de tweede verdieping vijf dito vensters. Centraal even onder goothoogte de zwarte letters 'Donau' tegen een gele achtergrond. In de topgevel bevinden zich nog twee achtruits vensters aan weerszijden van een uitgemetseld muurvlak met rondbogen aan de onderzijde en bovenop een gepleisterd fronton. Centraal in dit uitgemetselde, meeknikkende muurvlak een laaddeur met hijsbalk.
De westelijke, slechts gedeeltelijk zichtbare linker zijgevel is blind. De overige zijden zijn geheel ingebouwd. De inwendige draagconstructie bestaat uit een Amerikaans grenen houtskelet.
Waardering
Het uit 1894 daterende graanpakhuis 'Donau' is van algemeen belang wegens architectuur- en cultuurhistorische alsook industrieel-archeologische en typologische waarde als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het pellerijcomplex 'Mercurius' en als kenmerkend en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een laat 19de-eeuws opslaggebouw ten behoeve van de machinale gortpellerij met gebruik van stoomkracht, opgetrokken in een voor de bouwperiode karakteristieke architectuur waarin historiserende elementen met eigentijdse motieven gecombineerd zijn. Voorts van grote ensemblewaarde wegens de historische-functionele en ruimtelijke samenhang met de naburige industriebebouwing langs de Zaan.

Grain warehouse 'Donau' built in 1894 according to a design by the brothers Gorter for the barley-peeling firm Gebroeders Laan as an extension of the steam pellery in a sober Transitional architecture, forming part of the pellery complex 'Mercurius'. Description
On a rectangular floor plan with chamfered corner, warehouse built in grey brickwork in bond of three storeys, under a gabled roof covered with red hollow tiles with the ridge line running across the Zaan. In the brickwork joint courses, bands and blocks of yellow facing brick. In the brickwork rose anchors. The windows are iron.
The symmetrical front facade (S), with plastered corner lisenes and soffit edge, is five window axes wide. On the ground floor and first storey, two doors between three iron eight-pane windows with hardstone drip moulds under segmental arches. On the second storey five similar windows. Centrally just below eaves height the black letters 'Donau' against a yellow background. In the gable two eight-pane windows are located on either side of a mortared wall surface with round arches at the bottom and on top a plastered pediment. Centrally in this mortared, hinged wall surface a loading door with lifting beam.
The western, only partially visible left side facade is blind. The remaining sides are completely built in. The internal load-bearing structure consists of an American pine timber frame.
Valuation
The grain warehouse 'Donau' dating from 1894 is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical as well as industrial-archaeological and typological value as a historically-functional component of the pellery complex 'Mercurius' and as a characteristic and well-preserved example of a late 19th-century storage building for machine barley-peeling using steam power, built in an architecture characteristic for the building period in which historicising elements are combined with contemporary motifs. Furthermore of great ensemble value for the historically-functional and spatial coherence with neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
