Inleiding

Introduction

Warehouse 'Koningsbergen' built in 1897 for the barley-peeling firm Gebroeders Laan by local contractor-architect Dirk Stam in Transitional architecture, forming part of the pellery complex 'Mercurius'. Built on the site of an older wooden warehouse demolished for this purpose, the building was originally intended for the storage of grain and was subsequently connected by means of an air bridge to the adjacent factory 'Mercurius'. On the other side (W) warehouse Donau is adjoined. With its long representative facade facing the river, the warehouse forms part of the varied industrial landscape along the Zaan banks where food, oil and timber industries dominated and water transport was an essential condition for establishing businesses.

Description

A substantial, semi-detached warehouse on a rectangular floor plan built in red/grey brickwork in bond in three storeys under a hipped roof truncated and covered with hollow tiles. The mortared plinth has a weathering. In the brickwork yellow facing brick bands and blocks. The tooth courses are alternating in yellow and red stone. In the pilasters and lisenes wall anchors with double scroll. The windows are iron.

The symmetrical front facade (S) is articulated by lisenes and pilasters into nine bays of unequal width. The second, fifth and eighth function as risalits, are built higher and have rudimentary pilasters with small mortared piers at the top, the same as on the corners. The fifth, central bay is the widest and highest, and has in black relief against a background of yellow facing brick, the name of the building.

The bays of the risalits have arched doors on the ground floor and first storey and paired round-arched windows at the top under basket arches. The remaining bays have on the ground floor a multi-pane round-arched window, above it a nine-pane arched window and on the top storey a horizontal six-pane window. Between the ground floor and the storeys a tooth course is mortared and above the third storey a tooth course with weathering. The left side facade (W) is adjacent to warehouse 'Donau'. The truncated right side facade (E) is articulated in a similar manner to the front facade and has four bays with round-arched windows in a spandrel with tooth course on the ground floor and also on the storeys the same windows as in the front facade. The gable with chamfered sides is terminated by a stepped frieze.

The rear facade (N) is hidden from view by two pelleries of 'Mercurius' built in 1893 and 1900-1901 respectively. The narrow space between these two buildings and 'Koningsbergen' was built up in 1908.

The internal load-bearing structure consists of round cast-iron columns, slightly widening at the top, carrying I-beams. Between beam and column a square bearing plate. The columns diminish per storey. The attic storey has a load-bearing structure of pine posts.

Valuation

The warehouse 'Koningsbergen' dating from 1897 is of general importance for its architectural and cultural-historical as well as industrial-archaeological and typological value as a historically-functional component of the pellery complex 'Mercurius' and as a characteristic and largely well-preserved example of a large-scale, late 19th-century storage building for machine barley-peeling using steam power, built in an architecture characteristic for the building period in which historicising elements are combined with contemporary motifs. Furthermore of great ensemble value for the historically-functional and spatial coherence with neighbouring industrial buildings along the Zaan.
