Inleiding

Introduction

SLUICE BRIDGE over the Zuidera Drainage Canal, ca. 1900, built during its construction (1887-1900) in traditional craft forms. It incorporates a culvert for the passage of the Hoge Vaart and two collection basins with outlets fitted with sluice gates. The sluice bridge also includes distinctive ironwork and two iron hand wheels to manually operate the sluice gates via rods.

Description

The sluice bridge is located at the intersection of the Zuidera Drainage Canal with Hogevaart street and the formerly narrow Hoge Vaart peat channel running parallel to it, which was narrowed during the construction of the Zuidera Drainage Canal. The Hoge Vaart is led beneath the canal via a culvert. The bridge section consists of a later-added concrete capping plate with an asphalt roadway. The sluice bridge is constructed with machine-made brick, laid in header-stretcher bond and reinforced with ashlar capping plates and water frames with strike posts and top collars.

The water frame on the north side is sealed; that on the south side functions with a wooden sluice gate. Behind each of these water frames is a collection basin with a wooden roof. The wooden gate can be operated via an iron rod with a hand wheel.

Both operating mechanisms remain intact. On the sluice bridge, a large iron railing of approximately 1 metre in height stands on both sides, consisting of rolled iron bars which are riveted and bolted together. An X-shaped wind brace is fitted in the railing. At each corner of the sluice bridge, the railing has a quarter-round indentation.

Valuation

The sluice bridge is of general public interest. The sluice bridge has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the geographical and landscape development of the Hoge Vaart and the surrounding area in relation to the canalization of the Bergse Maas and the associated construction of the Zuidera Drainage Canal.

The sluice bridge is of architectural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of technical and typological development. The sluice bridge has ensemble value as an essential component of the waterway and canal system that served for the drainage of the Bergse Maas and the low-lying polders via, among others, the Hoge Vaart and the Zuidera Drainage Canal.
