The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Well-preserved COUNTRY HOUSE with COACH HOUSE, erected in the year 1866 in traditional forms. The spacious building is situated on the east side of the formerly filled-in harbour of Capelle. This was excavated again in 1996 and 1997.

Description

Cellared two-storey country house of five bays with coach house on the right side. The building has a rectangular ground plan and is constructed on an ashlar plinth with an ashlar base. The facades are of machine-made brickwork, laid in Flemish bond. The hipped roof is covered with predominantly black Dutch tiles and has a brick chimney at each corner. On the ground floor the building has wrought-iron corner railings with spirals and rosettes. The symmetrically placed windows have rounded shoulders and are fitted with six-light sash windows. The windows have a moulded surround and ashlar sub-sills. Casement door with hood decoration; cast-iron tree of life in the fanlight. Cornice on worked scroll-shaped consoles. In the side facades are the iron wall anchors of the first floor beam layer. On the rear side a conservatory was added in 1996; this falls outside the protection applying at national level.

Internally, much of the original arrangement and ornamentation has been preserved in the building. The residential section is divided in two by the broad central corridor which runs through the entire depth of the dwelling. On the left are two rooms en suite with fine marble mantels and delicately worked stucco ceilings.

In the rear room a probably late-nineteenth-century steel safe with double door is mortared in. This was made at the time by the factories R. Timmermans in 's-Hertogenbosch. In the kitchen the cooking place with smoke chamber is particularly noteworthy.

The single-storey coach house is, set back slightly, situated against the right side of the residential building and is internally connected to it as well. It has brick facades and a hipped roof with Dutch tiles. Notably large entrance portal with fanlight and rounded shoulders. Stucco surround with hood decoration with the year 1866 painted on it. The coach house still has internally the rainwater cistern and a copper cooking kettle.
