Inleiding
DIENSTWONINGEN, gebouwd in 1906 in opdracht van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen voor haar personeel bij het reeds verdwenen treinstation aan de spoorlijn van Tilburg naar Turnhout, op de grens van Nederland en België. De woningen zijn ontworpen door G.W. van Heukelom met elementen van Traditionalisme en Chaletstijl.
Omschrijving
Dubbel woonhuis op kruisvormige plattegrond onder een samengesteld dak. Nummer 20 heeft een topgevel met windveer en wolfdak, haaks op de straat, nummer 22 heeft een half schilddak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen met een gepleisterde plint, het dak is gedekt met kruispannen en voorzien van pirons. Bij nummer 20 is de deur met bovenlicht met kleine roedenverdeling in de zijgevel geplaatst. Voor de ingang liggen enkele hardstenen treden. Links daarvan twee rechthoekige ramen met onderluiken en bovenlichten met een kleine roedenverdeling. Rechts van de deur is een raam geplaatst. De onderdorpel ligt iets hoger, de vormgeving is verder identiek. Boven de deur doorsnijdt een dakkapel het dakvlak. De voorgevel bevat drie grote ramen als links van de deur en een dakkapel onder opgewipt dak. Bij nummer 22 is een latere (ontsierende) opbouw tegen het midden van de linkerzijgevel gepleegd. De voorgevel heeft een uitstekend deel, links is een groot driedelig raam met bovenlicht met kleine roedenverdeling en onderlichten met luiken geplaatst. Rechts daarvan zijn twee T-ramen aangebracht met een detaillering als de overige ramen. De paneeldeur met zij- en bovenlichten, ligt iets terug in de gevel.
Waardering
De woningen zijn van algemeen belang. Ze hebben cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de dienstwoning en als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de totstandkoming van een groot, intussen verdwenen, grensstation met annexen. Ze zijn van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de stijl en detaillering en wegens de plaats die ze innemen in het oeuvre van de architect. SERVICE DWELLINGS, built in 1906 on behalf of the Dutch Railways for its staff at the now-vanished railway station on the line from Tilburg to Turnhout, on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. Description
Semi-detached house on a cross-shaped floor plan beneath a composite roof. Number 20 has a gable with wind braces and half-hipped roof, perpendicular to the street; number 22 has a half hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the street. The whole is executed in brick with a rendered plinth; the roof is covered with interlocking tiles and provided with roof cresting. At number 20 the door with fanlight with small glazing bars is placed in the side façade. In front of the entrance are several stone steps. To the left of this are two rectangular windows with lower shutters and fanlights with small glazing bars. To the right of the door is a window placed. The sill is positioned somewhat higher; the design is otherwise identical. Above the door a roof dormer intersects the roof plane. The front façade contains three large windows as to the left of the door and a roof dormer beneath a tilting roof. At number 22 a later (disfiguring) extension has been made against the middle of the left side façade. The front façade has a projecting section; on the left a large three-part window with fanlight with small glazing bars and lower lights with shutters is placed. To the right of this are two T-windows installed with detailing as the other windows. The panel door with side and fanlights is set somewhat back in the façade.
