Inleiding
DIENSTWONINGEN, gebouwd in 1906 in opdracht van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen voor haar personeel bij het reeds verdwenen treinstation aan de spoorlijn van Tilburg naar Turnhout, op de grens van Nederland en België. De woningen zijn ontworpen door G.W. van Heukelom met elementen van Traditionalisme en Chaletstijl.
Omschrijving
Twee identieke dubbele woonhuizen waarvan de woningen in opzet aan elkaar gespiegeld zijn. Elk blok is één laag hoog en uitgevoerd in baksteen op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een schilddak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. Het dak is gedekt met zwarte kruispannen met pirons en voorzien van een gootlijst op klossen. De bovenste rand van de gevel is betimmerd met vertikaal aangebrachte planken. Beide hoeken van de voorgevel liggen terug zodat onder het dak een ruim portiek ontstaat met een veranda-achtig uiterlijk door houten balustrade met hoekpijler en betimmering van de bovenste rand. In de voorgevel zijn T-ramen aangebracht, de onderramen zijn voorzien van luiken, in de bovenlichten is een roedenverdeling aangebracht. De ramen hebben natuurstenen onderdorpels. De deur heeft boven- en zijlichten, alle met een kleine roedenverdeling. In het dakvlak bevinden zich opgewipte dakkapellen, aan de voorzijde met een samengesteld raam van twee maal drie vierruitsramen. Bij nummer 10 is het interieur in grote lijnen in oorspronkelijke staat bewaard gebleven.
Waardering
De woningen zijn van algemeen belang. Ze hebben cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de dienstwoning en als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de totstandkoming van een groot, intussen verdwenen, grensstation met annexen. Ze zijn van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de stijl en detaillering en wegens de plaats die ze innemen in het oeuvre van de architect. Ze hebben ensemblewaarde wegens de situering, verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek. Introduction
SERVICE DWELLINGS, built in 1906 on behalf of the Dutch Railways for its staff at the now-vanished railway station on the line from Tilburg to Turnhout, on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The dwellings were designed by G.W. van Heukelom with elements of Traditionalism and Chalet style.
Description
Two identical semi-detached houses where the dwellings are mirrored in arrangement. Each block is one storey high and executed in brick on a rectangular floor plan beneath a hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the street. The roof is covered with black interlocking tiles with roof cresting and is provided with a gutter moulding on brackets. The upper edge of the façade is boarded with vertically applied planks. Both corners of the front façade are set back so that beneath the roof a spacious porch is created with a veranda-like appearance by wooden balustrade with corner pillar and boarding of the upper edge. T-windows are installed in the front façade; the lower windows are provided with shutters; the fanlights have glazing bars. The windows have natural stone sills. The door has side and fanlights, all with small glazing bars. In the roof plane there are tilting roof dormers, on the front with a composite window of two by three four-pane windows. At number 10 the interior has been preserved in large part in original condition.
Valuation
The dwellings are of general importance. They have cultural-historical significance as an expression of the typological development of the service dwelling and as an expression of social-economic development, particularly the creation of a large, now-vanished, border station with annexes. They are of architectural-historical significance due to their style and detailing and due to their place in the architect's oeuvre.
