Inleiding
DIENSTWONINGEN, gebouwd in 1906 in opdracht van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen voor haar personeel bij het reeds verdwenen treinstation aan de spoorlijn van Tilburg naar Turnhout, op de grens van Nederland en België. De woningen zijn ontworpen door G.W. van Heukelom met elementen van Traditionalisme en Chaletstijl.
Omschrijving
Drie identieke objecten, in oorspronkelijke opzet symmetrisch. Elk pand is één laag hoog op een vierkante plattegrond onder tentdak. Naar achter toe wordt het pand breder, de uitstekende delen zijn voorzien van een lessenaarsdak, in het verlengde van het hoofddak. Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen en voorzien van een gepleisterde plint, voor de deur bevinden zich enkele hardstenen treden. Alle ramen zijn voorzien van hardstenen onderdorpels. Het dak is gedekt met kruispannen en heeft een gootlijst op consoles. In de voorgevel zijn per woning twee vierruitsramen met bovenlichten aangebracht. De bovenlichten hebben een kleine roedenverdeling, de onderramen zijn van luiken voorzien. In de zijgevel een smal achtruitsraam met één luik. De kopse gevel van het uitstekende deel heeft een opgeklampte deur.
In de achtergevel zijn een deur en ramen geplaatst in dezelfde vormgeving als deur en ramen in de voorgevel. Het interieur van nummer 2 verkeert in oorspronkelijke staat met links in het huis een voor- en achterkamer, beiden met bedstede en rechts daarvan de gang die uitkomt in de keuken met schouw. Achteraan in de keuken bevindt zich de trap naar de zolder, onder de trap is een kelder aanwezig.
Grens 40-42 is verbouwd waarbij nieuwe kozijnen met behoud van de oorspronkelijke vormgeving zijn aangebracht.
Waardering
De woningen zijn van algemeen belang. Ze hebben cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de dienstwoning en als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de totstandkoming van een groot, intussen verdwenen, grensstation met annexen. Ze zijn van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de stijl en detaillering en wegens de plaats die ze innemen in het oeuvre van de architect. Introduction
SERVICE DWELLINGS, built in 1906 on behalf of the Dutch Railways for its staff at the now-vanished railway station on the line from Tilburg to Turnhout, on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The dwellings were designed by G.W. van Heukelom with elements of Traditionalism and Chalet style.
Description
Three identical structures, symmetrical in original layout. Each building is one storey high on a square floor plan beneath a tent roof. Towards the rear the building becomes wider, the protruding sections are provided with a lean-to roof, in line with the main roof. The whole is executed in brick and provided with a rendered plinth; in front of the door are several stone steps. All windows are provided with stone sills. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles and has a gutter moulding on consoles. In the front façade each dwelling has two four-pane windows with fanlights. The fanlights have small glazing bars; the lower windows are provided with shutters. In the side façade a narrow six-pane window with one shutter. The gable end of the protruding section has a clamped door.
In the rear façade a door and windows are placed in the same design as the door and windows in the front façade. The interior of number 2 is in original condition with a front and back room on the left side of the house, both with built-in beds, and on the right the hallway which leads to the kitchen with chimney. At the rear of the kitchen is the stair to the loft; beneath the stair is a cellar.
Boundary 40-42 has been altered with new window frames installed while preserving the original design.
Valuation
The dwellings are of general importance. They have cultural-historical significance as an expression of the typological development of the service dwelling and as an expression of social-economic development, particularly the creation of a large, now-vanished, border station with annexes.
