Inleiding
DIENSTWONING, gebouwd in 1906 in opdracht van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen voor haar personeel bij het reeds verdwenen treinstation aan de spoorlijn van Tilburg naar Turnhout, op de grens van Nederland en België. De woning is ontworpen door G.W. van Heukelom met elementen van Traditionalisme en Chaletstijl.
Omschrijving
Eénlaags woonhuis op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder wolfdak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen en heeft een gepleisterde plint, het dak is gedekt met kruispannen en heeft pirons. Het dak is aan de voorzijde voorzien van een gootlijst op consoles, aan de achterkant rust de goot op klossen. De beide zijgevels hebben een topgevel met windveer.
De voorgevel heeft twee grote ramen, één met middenstijl, in het andere is een driedeling aangebracht. Onderlichten met luiken, bovenlichten met een roedenverdeling. De linkerzijgevel heeft twee zesruitsramen, in de top zijn twee kleinere openslaande ramen aangebracht. In de bovenlichten is steeds een kleine roedenverdeling aangebracht. De getoogde deur met bovenlicht is omlijst en in het midden van de rechterzijgevel geplaatst. Aan weerszijden bevindt zich een raam met middenstijl als in de voorgevel.
Voor de deur liggen een drietal hardstenen treetjes. In de top is een zesdelig raam aangebracht. In een opgewipte dakkapel zijn drie aaneengesloten kleine vierruitsraampjes aangebracht.
Waardering
De woning is van algemeen belang. Ze heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de dienstwoning en als uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de totstandkoming van een groot, intussen verdwenen, grensstation met annexen. Het object is van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de stijl en detaillering en wegens de plaats in het oeuvre van de architect. SERVICE DWELLING, built in 1906 on behalf of the Dutch Railways for its staff at the now-vanished railway station on the line from Tilburg to Turnhout, on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The dwelling was designed by G.W. van Heukelom with elements of Traditionalism and Chalet style.
Description
One-storey house on a rectangular floor plan beneath a half-hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the street. The whole is executed in brick and has a rendered plinth; the roof is covered with interlocking tiles and has roof cresting. The roof is provided on the front with a gutter moulding on consoles; at the rear the gutter rests on brackets. Both side gables have a gable with wind braces.
The front façade has two large windows, one with a centre mullion; in the other a three-part division is provided. Lower lights with shutters, fanlights with glazing bars. The left side façade has two six-pane windows; in the gable are two smaller casement windows. The fanlights always have small glazing bars. The arched door with fanlight is framed and placed in the middle of the right side façade. On either side is a window with centre mullion as in the front façade.
In front of the door are three stone steps. In the gable is a six-part window. In a tilting roof dormer are three adjoining small four-pane windows.
Valuation
The dwelling is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an expression of the typological development of the service dwelling and as an expression of social-economic development, particularly the creation of a large, now-vanished, border station with annexes.
