Omschrijving onderdeel I: BOERDERIJ
Inleiding

Introduction
The estate De Hoevens, a tenanted farm of the abbey of Tongerlo since the Middle Ages, was purchased in 1918 by the brothers Blomjous from Tilburg. In 1922 a HUNTING CHAMBER was added to an existing FARMHOUSE in Craft-Traditional style from the nineteenth century, designed in 1920 by the Tilburg architect Jan van der Valk in a mixture of Traditionalist forms and a regional variant of the Amsterdam School. Against the farmhouse is located the hunting chamber, placed at a 45-degree angle, built of machine-made brick with a half-hipped roof covered with reed. The farmhouse has a residential section in hand-formed brick, the business section was renewed around 1900 in machine-made brick. The residential house has six-pane sash windows with hourglass shutters. The business section has four-pane windows under segmental arches which at the time of alteration replaced concrete windows. On the left side gable adjoins a three-sided enclosed oriel, within which is a fireplace. The roof is crowned here with a tall octagonal chimney. A terrace with a brick parapet and steps surrounds the gable end. In the right gable are two shallow oriels. The transition with the gable end of the farmhouse section is formed by an entrance placed at right angles to the farmhouse with a thatched half-hipped roof. Triangular lintels and a trapezoidal spandrel with the house name in terracotta decorative bricks in the facade. The wall openings consist of hourglass shutter-fitted, one-, two- and three-part window sets provided with leaded glass with coloured border motifs including guild marks and hourglass motifs. The front door is a panelled door with decorative ornamental strips in leaded glass on both sides. To the right of this door two small light openings with the same ornamental motifs. The entrance vestibule has a floor with mosaic tiles with checked motifs and brickwork in exposed bond. Doors provide access to the original toilet and the stairway to the attic. In the corner with the farmhouse is a small pantry with plastered walls and wainscoting with tile border from the time of construction. The hunting chamber has three beam bays and two narrower end bays and has walls partly consisting of exposed brickwork and a ceiling of iron braces and beams with timber framing. The oriels have dark wooden panelling. On either side of the oriel against the gable end are two diagonal cupboards with leaded glass doors.
