Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The SCHOOL BUILDING for the primary school "Het Molenven" is situated on the north-western corner of the complex surrounding the Mariaplein and is enclosed by the built environment along the corner of Victorialaan - Wilhelminalaan. In front (south side) of the school building lies a school playground. The school, which was built in 1939-40 to the design of A.J. Kropholler and the 's-Hertogenbosch architects G. and H. Koesen, displays a Traditionalist formal language. The client was the Catholic Parish Maria Middelares aller Genaden. In 1965 the school building was extended on the western side with a new wing for two classrooms and a staff room: this extension, also designed by A.J. Kropholler, was already foreseen in the first building phase and indicated in the building drawings.

Description

The school building has a roughly rectangular floor plan, with an outbuilding for a bicycle shed on the south-eastern side. The building has one storey under a projecting gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Along the roof a gutter on brackets has been fitted. Above the front facade three roof dormers. The walls are built in brick, with natural stone elements, such as stone arises of arches, coping lists and columns.

The main entrance is located on the western side of the school building and consists of a double opening oak door with windows. This is situated in a portico with a round arch, provided with solid natural stone arises. A low sandstone step leads to this portico. Above the entrance section a small gable with a round arched window. This gable is covered with a natural stone list, crowned with a cross. To the right of the entrance section the classrooms are provided with large, paired upright windows, fitted with steel frames containing simple leaded glass. Above these windows stretches, in the centre between the paired windows provided with natural stone blocks. At the far right of the front facade, at the height of a narrow corridor, a smaller window with two-light frame has been fitted. To the right of this a rectangular single-storey outbuilding under a monopitch roof for the bicycle shed. The brick walls of this outbuilding are covered at the top by a natural stone list, with a block-shaped element on the south-western corner. This outbuilding is opened on the western side by two large round arches, resting on a concrete/natural stone column with block capital, above which a natural stone arch arise. In the rear part of the bicycle shed an office space was later fitted, whereby the arched opening was closed off with a wall. On the south side of the bicycle shed a smaller arch has been made. The eastern facade of the school building and the adjoining bicycle shed is entirely closed. The gable above the gable end of the school is provided at the top with a natural stone coping list.

The rear facade of the school building (northern facade) is at the height of the corridor provided with three paired upright low windows with leaded glass frames. Above this a row with natural stone blocks. Between these paired window sections are situated at the height of the toilets small single-light windows. At the far right of the rear facade is a shallow outbuilding at the height of the headmaster's office. In this a upright window with cross window has been fitted. On the west side the section of the school building dating from 1939 adjoins the new wing.

The interior of the school building still gives a good impression of the original layout and also shows a large number of original elements. In the hall, the portico and the corridor we find a tiled floor and wainscoting of glazed stone. In the hall and portico fair-faced brickwork, the walls of the corridor and the rooms above the wainscoting are rendered. Via the entrance one enters a portico.

Above the entrance a tile band has been fitted, on which the text "God be on your path and his angels guide you" has been set. Tile decorations are also found in the side walls of the portico: on the left a square tile tableau with a stylised rose, on the right with a stylised lily. In the wainscoting of glazed stone on the left in the portico a date stone is set in with the text "For knowledge and virtue, 1940". Opposite the entrance is a double wooden door with back-lights and leaded glass fanlight, which gives access to the hall. This is provided on the left and right sides with an arched passage, which gives access to the corridor for the classrooms. Opposite the door between portico and hall is the office for the headmaster. This room is provided on the right side with a window with cross window. To the left of this a round arched niche with a natural stone console for a sculpture. Below this a curved sandstone raised edge. In the corridor to the classrooms leaded glass windows, of which the middle of the three paired windows is each provided with a figurative representation shown in a pane. In the corridor four arches in fair-faced brickwork, with natural stone arises. The classrooms are at the height of the corridor provided with two-part composite windows with small glazing bars and simple leaded glass frames. Wooden panel doors with four-light window give access to the classrooms. In the classrooms wooden floors.
