Inleiding

Introduction

Along the northern and eastern side of the Mariaplein lie two blocks of RESIDENTIAL HOUSES (five on the northern side and two on the eastern side of the square). These residential houses were built in 1933-34 on the former industrial site of the Grasso machine factory, commissioned by the R.K. parish Maria Middelares aller Genaden. The residential houses, built in a Traditionalist style, were designed by architect A.J. Kropholler, in collaboration with the Vught architects H. and G. Koesen.

Description

The residential houses have a rectangular floor plan and comprise two storeys under a gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Chimneys above the end gables. The facades are constructed in brick (cloister bricks). The end gables of the housing blocks have a natural stone coping. Apart from residential house no. 7, all residential houses have an entrance on the left side, consisting of a wooden panelled door with a small square window with leaded glass, fitted with iron grillwork. In front of the entrance a low stone step. Above this a wooden canopy, suspended from two iron rods, which spring from natural stone blocks in the facade.

To the right of the entrance two coupled casement windows with leaded glass fanlight. On the upper storey on the left four-paned and on the right six-paned casement windows with stretcher course and brick sill.

The rear facades of the residential houses have on the left a double garden door with three-paned fanlight, which provides direct access to the (former) back room. To the right of this the kitchen door with multi-paned window. On the upper storey casement windows with stretcher course and brick sill, identical to the windows of the upper storey of the front facade. The residential house Mariaplein 7 has the entrance, which is otherwise identical to the other residential houses, in the end gable. Furthermore, this corner house has on the west facade a single-storey annex under a gabled roof. Casement windows in the western and northern facade of this annex.

On the northeastern corner of the square, the two housing blocks are connected to each other by a wall with a round-arched gateway, which provides access to the paths that run behind the residential houses.

The interior of the residential houses was fairly plain and has been altered over time in the majority of the houses. Originally the residential houses on the ground floor had a front and back room, separated by wooden sliding doors fitted with windows with small glazing bars. In the corridors a Granito floor. On the upper storey a landing with lancet arch-shaped passage to the corridor for the bedrooms. In the wooden sliding doors fitted with windows with small glazing bars. In the back garden a number of houses still have wooden sheds dating from the time of construction under a flat roof.

Valuation

The residential houses at the Mariaplein are of general interest and possess cultural-historical value as an expression of socio-economic and spiritual developments. They form an illustration of the manner in which the R.K. church integrated into society between the two world wars. The residential houses are of architectural-historical importance as an example of housing construction in traditionalist style and because of the place they occupy within the oeuvre of architect A.J. Kropholler. The residential houses possess ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of national architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance. The residential houses are of importance because of their architectural integrity. Finally, the residential houses are of importance because of their architectural-historical and typological rarity.
