Inleiding.
CongregatieKAPEL, ontworpen door P.J.H. Cuypers in 1890 in Neo-Gotische stijl. Thans in gebruik als moskee. De kapel ligt in het centrum van Veghel, nabij de Markt. Het gebouw is ten noordwesten van de kerk, naast het kerkhof gesitueerd.
Omschrijving.
De kapel heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een middenschip, geflankeerd door smalle zijbeuken en heeft een driezijdig gesloten koor. Het middenschip heeft een zadeldak, gedekt met leien. Op de nok van het dak staat een achthoekige dakruiter met hoge spits. De zijbeuken zijn voorzien van een plat dak met opengewerkte bakstenen balustrade. Het geheel is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen met speklagen in gele steen. Decoratieve elementen zijn uitgevoerd in natuursteen. Middenschip en zijschepen zijn in de voorgevel duidelijk te onderscheiden. Het middendeel met topgevel is voorzien van steunberen, boven de gevel opgemetseld met een stervormige omtrek en bekroond door natuurstenen pinakels. De aangrenzende gevels van de zijbeuken hebben een balustrade, als de zijgevels. Op de hoeken steunberen, opgemetseld als bij het middenschip. De topgevel wordt bekroond door een pinakel. In een grote spitsboog, in het midden van de voorgevel bevindt zich een openslaande dubbele houten deur. Erboven een glas-in-loodraam met driedelig natuurstenen maaswerk in neo-gotische vormgeving. De velden aan weerszijden van de spitsboog zijn opgevuld met tegels, in het mozaïek zijn keramische reliëftegels verwerkt met een voorstelling van een Franse lelie. Erboven en in de topgevel zijn hoge spitsboogramen geplaatst. In het midden van de gevel een console en baldakijn met spits. Nissen met console en baldakijn zijn ook op de voorgevel ter plekke van de zijbeuken aangebracht, alle beelden zijn verdwenen. Spitsboogblindnissen, gevuld met een mozaïek als dat naast de ingang zijn daarboven aangebracht. De zijgevels worden geleed door steunberen. Deze steken boven de balustrade uit en hebben een bekroning in de vorm van een zadeldakje. Per travee is een groot triplet op een hardstenen vensterbank geplaatst, de ramen zijn gevuld met glas-in-lood. De achtergevel, van het koor heeft spitsboogramen. In het interieur is de verdeling van middenschip en zijbeuken nog herkenbaar. In het brede schip heeft een verlaagd plafond. In de zijbeuken is de vorm van de spitsbooggewelven herkenbaar gebleven. Het koor is tot aan de aanzet van het gewelf afgetimmerd. Het interieur is in belangrijke mate uitgevoerd in schoon metselwerk, nu gedeeltelijk afgewerkt met onder meer houten platen. Als gevolg van de gewijzigde functie is veel van de inrichting weggehaald.
Waardering.
De kapel is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw is van cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk het ontstaan van congregaties voor parochianen in de 19de en vroege 20ste eeuw. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de detaillering en vanwege de plaats in het late oeuvre van de architect Cuypers. De kapel heeft ensemblewaarde wegens de situering, zij maakt deel uit van een katholieke groep in het centrum van Veghel waartoe ook pastorie, klooster, kerk en kerkhof behoren. Description.
The chapel has a rectangular plan and consists of a nave, flanked by narrow aisles and has a three-sided closed choir. The nave has a gabled roof, covered with slate. On the ridge of the roof stands an octagonal roof turret with a high spire. The aisles are provided with a flat roof with open-worked brick balustrade. The whole is constructed of machine-made brick with courses of yellow brick. Decorative elements are executed in natural stone. Nave and aisles are clearly distinguishable in the front facade. The central section with stepped gable is provided with buttresses, laid up above the facade with a star-shaped outline and crowned by natural stone pinnacles. The adjoining facades of the aisles have a balustrade, as do the side facades. Buttresses at the corners, laid up as in the nave. The stepped gable is crowned by a pinnacle. In a large pointed arch, in the middle of the front facade is an opening double wooden door. Above it a stained-glass window with three-part natural stone tracery in neo-gothic design. The fields on either side of the pointed arch are filled with tiles, in the mosaic ceramic relief tiles are incorporated with a representation of a French lily. Above and in the stepped gable are high pointed-arch windows placed. In the middle of the facade a console and baldachin with spire. Niches with console and baldachin are also placed on the front facade in the position of the aisles, all statues have disappeared. Pointed-arch blind niches, filled with a mosaic like that next to the entrance are placed above. The side facades are articulated by buttresses. These project above the balustrade and have a crown in the form of a small gabled roof. Per bay a large triplet is placed on a hardstone window-sill, the windows are filled with stained glass. The rear facade, of the choir has pointed-arch windows. In the interior the division of nave and aisles is still recognisable. In the wide nave a lowered ceiling. In the aisles the form of the pointed-arch vaults remains recognisable. The choir is boarded up up to the point of the vault. The interior is to a large extent executed in fair brickwork, now partly finished with amongst other things wooden panels. As a result of the changed function much of the interior fittings has been removed.
Valuation.
The chapel is of general importance. The building is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of a spiritual development, namely the emergence of congregations for parishioners in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It has architectural-historical value because of the detailing and because of its place in the late work of the architect Cuypers. The chapel has ensemble value because of its situation, it forms part of a Catholic group in the centre of Veghel which also includes a rectory, convent, church and churchyard. The building is important because of the integrity of the exterior and the spatial disposition of the interior.
