Inleiding
Voormalig WINKEL-WARENHUIS in Expressionistische stijl van de firma P. de Gruyter en Zn. uit 1933. Gebouwd naar ontwerp van T. Wilschut de huisarchitect van bovengenoemde firma. De winkel ligt aan de Gasthuisring in de wijk Veldhoven.
Omschrijving
De kubusvormige winkel heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee bouwlagen gedekt door een plat dak met aan de voor en zijkanten een borstwering. Aan de achterkant bevindt zich een eenlaags gedeelte eveneens onder een plat dak. De voorgevel bevat een metalen symmetrische etalagepui met dubbele teakhouten glasdeuren en bovenlicht met twee tussenstijlen en twee horizontale glasroeden. De grote flankerende etalageramen hebben een smalle strook van drie bovenlichten met twee tussenstijlen. De pui bevat aan beide zijkanten een heldere gebogen glazen bouwsteen die voorzien is van een cannelure. De gehele pui is gevat in blauwachtig gevlamd tegelwerk met speciaal gevormde hoek- en lekdorpeltegels afkomstig van de fabriek "De Porceleijne Fles" uit Delft. Bovendien bevat de getegelde puibalk, afkomstig van dezelfde fabriek, in het midden in kapitalen weergegeven de naam van de firma: "P. de Gruyter en Zn." en opzij aanzetornamenten in goudkleur. De tweede bouwlaag heeft een groot stalen venster dat horizontaal in tweeën wordt gedeeld door een in de gevel uitstekend betonnen kalf. Het venster met zwarte lekdorpelstenen heeft zeven tussenstijlen. Het is voorzien van gehamerd glas-in-lood, uitgevoerd in transparant glas, dat afgewisseld wordt door varianten op geometrische wijze, in de kleuren blauw, geel en paars. De muurdam, rechts naast het venster, doorbreekt door middel van een vierkantige opbouw en gedekt door een plat dak de dakrand van de gevel. In het midden van deze muurdam bevindt zich een smalle lichtstrook van groene glazen prismavormige bouwstenen. De rechterzijgevel en achtergevel zijn blind uitgevoerd. De linkerzijgevel heeft een getrapte opbouw, die doorbroken wordt door de schoorsteenopbouw. In het laagste deel bevindt zich onder een betonlatei een dubbele houten achterdeur met daarin bovenlichten voorzien van een horizontale glasroede. Naast de deuren onder dezelfde latei een klein venster met een vierruits roedenindeling. Hierboven een negenruits stalen venster van het kantoor van de filiaalchef. In het hoogste deel van de gevel bevinden zich op de tweede bouwlaag en symmetrisch in de gevel twee identieke smalle vensters. Qua uitvoering en indeling stemmen ze overeen met het grote venster van de voorgevel. Het opgaande werk bestaat uit geel genuanceerde baksteen gemetseld in kettingverband en voorzien van terugliggend voegwerk. Een extra accent geven de enigszins verdiepte muurvlakken, met de bekroning van een doorlopende rollaag, opzij van de schoorsteen en rond de vensters van de tweede bouwlaag. Het geheel staat op een basement van rood/paarse baksteen. Aan de bovenkant worden de gevels afgesloten door een geglazuurde haakse zwarte afdekpan. De indeling van het winkel-warenhuis is ongewijzigd. Het bevat naast de winkelruimte een kleine kelder, een koelruimte op de begane grond, magazijn op de tweede bouwlaag en halverwege de trapopgang het kantoor van de filiaalchef. Het interieur van de winkel heeft stucwerk met geprofileerde randen in wand en plafond.
Waardering
Het winkel-warenhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de uitgroei van de grootschalige detailhandel met vele plaatselijke vestigingen en een eigen huisstijl, het is van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de winkel. Former SHOP-DEPARTMENT STORE in Expressionist style of the firm P. de Gruyter and Sons from 1933. Built according to design by T. Wilschut the house architect of the aforementioned firm. The shop is located on the Gasthuisring in the district of Veldhoven.
Description
The cube-shaped shop has a rectangular plan and consists of two storeys covered by a flat roof with a parapet on the front and side faces. At the rear there is a single-storey section likewise under a flat roof. The front facade contains a metal symmetrical display window with double teak wood glass doors and fanlight with two mullions and two horizontal glazing bars. The large flanking display windows have a narrow strip of three fanlights with two mullions. The display window contains on both sides a bright curved glass brick which is provided with a fluting. The entire display window is set in bluish flamed tilework with specially shaped corner and drip-edge tiles from the factory "De Porceleijne Fles" from Delft. Moreover the tiled display window base, from the same factory, contains in the middle displayed in capitals the name of the firm: "P. de Gruyter and Sons" and at the side applied ornaments in gold colour. The second storey has a large steel window which is horizontally divided in two by a concrete fascia projecting in the facade. The window with black drip-edge stones has seven mullions. It is provided with hammered leaded glass, executed in transparent glass, which is alternated by variants in geometric manner, in the colours blue, yellow and purple. The wall pier, right beside the window, breaks through by means of a square structure and covered by a flat roof the eaves of the facade. In the middle of this wall pier is a narrow light strip of green prismatic glass bricks. The right side facade and rear facade are executed blind. The left side facade has a stepped structure, which is interrupted by the chimney structure. In the lowest part is located beneath a concrete lintel a double wooden back door with fanlights above provided with a horizontal glazing bar. Next to the doors beneath the same lintel a small window with a four-paned glazing bar. Above this a nine-pane steel window of the office of the branch manager. In the highest part of the facade on the second storey and symmetrical in the facade are two identical narrow windows. In terms of execution and layout they correspond with the large window of the front facade. The wall structure consists of yellowish-toned brick laid in chain bond and provided with recessed pointing. An extra accent is provided by the somewhat recessed wall surfaces, with the finish of a continuous roll moulding, beside the chimney and around the windows of the second storey. The whole stands on a base of red/purple brick. At the top the facades are finished with a glazed hipped black coping tile. The layout of the shop-department store is unchanged. It contains besides the shop space a small cellar, a cooling room on the ground floor, storage on the second storey and halfway up the staircase the office of the branch manager. The interior of the shop has stucco work with moulded edges on wall and ceiling.
Valuation
The shop-department store is of general significance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of socio-economic development, in particular the growth of large-scale retail trade with many local branches and its own house style, it is significant as an example of the typological development of the shop. It has architectural-historical value because of its place in the history of Expressionist architecture and in the oeuvre of the architect and because of the exceptional use of materials. It has been well preserved.
