Inleiding

Voormalig HERENHUIS in Eclectische stijl met Neo-Classicistische en Barokke motieven. Het is gebouwd in 1897 door de welgestelde Tilburgse wollenstoffenfabrikant P.J.A.W. Bogaers. Het halfvrijstaande huis is een hoekhuis, de rechterzijgevel staat in de Tuinstraat. Het huis maakt onderdeel uit van de Willem II straat, die vanaf 1870 is ontwikkeld na de aanleg van de spoorlijn door de stad. De fabriek van deze fabrikant stond tot de sloop rond 1975 aan de overkant in de Tuinstraat.

Omschrijving

Het huis heeft een L-vormige plattegrond. De rechterzijgevel, die in de Tuinstraat grenst, is gerend. De hoofdbouw bestaat uit twee bouwlagen met een zolderverdieping waarvan het achterste gedeelte onderkelderd is. Dit wordt gedekt door een steil schilddak met plat voorzien van leien. Op de hoek van de Willem II straat en de Tuinstraat zijn de gevels afgesnoten.

Hierboven bevindt zich in het dak een vierkant afgeplat torendak. Middenachter heeft het huis een rechthoekige serre gedekt door een schilddak met plat. Aan de kant van de Tuinstraat bevindt zich een eenlaagse rechthoekige bijbouw, die de keuken bevat. Hierop bevindt zich een balkon met eromheen een gemetselde gesloten balustrade. De begane grond van het huis ligt op ca. 80 cm boven de kruin van de weg. De voorgevel bestaat uit vijf traveeën. De twee linkse, liggend in een risaliet, zijn gekoppeld en gescheiden door een smalle muurdam. De risaliet heeft op de begane grond twee schuifvensters, op de tweede bouwlaag een hardstenen balkon dat bereikbaar is via twee balkondeuren met bovenlichten met een balustrade waarin smeedijzeren sierroosters en op de zolderverdieping een tuitgevel waarin een rondboogvenster met een T-vormige indeling. De ingangstravee, in het midden, bevat in een portiek een hardstenen bordes met een frontale trap van vier treden geflankeerd door eenvoudige ijzeren voetschrapers. De dubbele voordeur heeft snijwerk, een bovenlicht en smeedijzeren roosters. Hierboven op de tweede bouwlaag een breed venster met twee tussenstijlen en bovenlichten. De twee rechtse traveeën hebben op elke bouwlaag een schuifvenster. Boven de linkse hiervan in het dak een staand ovalen zinken oeil de boeuf met versiering van palmet en lauwertakken. De afgesnoten hoek heeft een schuifvenster op de begane grond, een driezijdige stenen erker op de tweede bouwlaag rustend op consoles met aan de voorkant een breed venster met twee tussenstijlen en bovenlichten met in de zijkanten tweedelige vensters en op de zolderverdieping in het torendak een rechtgesloten venster met zinken zijvoluten en tympaanbekroning. De drie traveeën brede gevel in de Tuinstraat heeft een middenrisaliet met op de begane grond een eenvoudige zij- of dienstingang, die geflankeerd wordt door twee kleine vensters. Op de bordessen van het hierachter liggende trappenhuis bevinden zich twee T-vormige schuifvensters. De rechter travee heeft op elke bouwlaag eveneens T-vormige schuifvensters. De muuropeningen zijn getoogd. De linker travee komt qua afwerking en vensters overeen met die van de voorgevel en hoekafsnuiting. De achtergevel van vijf traveeën heeft T-vormige schuifvensters. De rechtse travee bevat op de begane grond dubbele tuindeuren met boven- en zijlichten. Naast de achterdeur een hardstenen gevelsteen met de namen van de zonen Vincent en Piet Bogaers. De gevels van het huis zijn gepleisterd. Ze hebben een hardstenen plint, fries en een kroonlijst. Rond de muuropeningen bevinden zich geprofileerde lijsten. De voorgevel, afsnuiting en eerste travee van de zijgevel heeft bovendien een rijke stucdecoratie met Neo-Classicistische en neo-barokke motieven met een hardstenen basement, cordonlijst en een bewerkt fries. De muuropeningen op de tweede bouwlaag zijn hier rechtgesloten; ze zijn gevat in een hoofdgestel dat bekroond wordt door een gebroken fronton. Alle andere muuropeningen in de gevels zijn getoogd.

Het interieur van het huis bevat op de begane grond een centrale hal. Aansluitend bevinden zich rondom de hoofdvertrekken rechts het trappenhuis naar de zolderverdieping en een naastgelegen eenvoudige diensttrap naar de tweede bouwlaag. De eikenhouten trappen met twee bordessen hebben kuipstukken rond het schalmgat en leuningen met gedraaide houten balusters en gesneden trappaal voorzien van acanthusbladeren. Voor de hal een vestibule. De hoofdvertrekken hebben bewerkte stucplafonds met lijst- en sierranden en drie bewerkte schoorsteenmantels zowel in hout als in marmer. Raam- en deurkozijnen zijn voorzien van architraven. In de deuren meerdere bossingpanelen. De hoofdvertrekken hebben portes-brisées. Naar de vestibule een glasdeur met zij- en bovenlichten. De vloerconstructie van de begane grond bestaat uit ijzeren I-profielen waartussen tongewelven zijn gemetseld. De afwerking in hal en vestibule is van geaderd wit marmer. In de kamers houten vloeren waarvan er verschillende zijn uitgevoerd als eiken parket. De twee linkerkamers hebben een eikenhouten lambrizering met snijwerk in de panelen. De gang naar de keuken heeft een witgetegelde lambrizering met blauw meanderende tegelranden. Het huis heeft meerdere kelders, waaronder een wijnkelder. De bovenlichten van de vensters in de hoofdbouw hebben glas-in-lood ramen met guirlandemotieven. In het bovenlicht van de oorspronkelijke achterdeur een glas-in-lood raam waarin het jaartal 1897 is verwerkt.

Waardering

Het herenhuis is van algemeen belang. Introduction

Former MANSION in Eclectic style with Neo-Classical and Baroque motifs. It was built in 1897 by the affluent Tilburg woollen cloth manufacturer P.J.A.W. Bogaers. The two right-hand bays have a sash window on each storey. Above the left one of these in the roof is a standing oval zinc oeil de boeuf with decoration of palmette and laurel branches. The cut-off corner has a sash window on the ground floor, a three-sided stone oriel on the second storey resting on consoles with a broad window on the front with two intermediate mullions and fanlights with two-part windows on the sides, and on the attic storey in the tower roof a straight-headed window with zinc side volutes and tympanum crest. The three-bay-wide gable in the Tuinstraat has a central risalit with on the ground floor a simple side or service entrance, flanked by two small windows. On the landings of the stairwell behind are two T-shaped sash windows. The right bay has T-shaped sash windows on each storey as well. The window openings are arched. The left bay corresponds in finish and windows with that of the front gable and corner cut-off. The rear gable of five bays has T-shaped sash windows. The right bay contains double glass doors to the garden with upper and side lights on the ground floor. Next to the rear door a hardstone lintel stone with the names of the sons Vincent and Piet Bogaers. The gables of the house are plastered. They have a hardstone plinth, frieze and cornice. Moulded surrounds are fitted around the window openings. The front gable, cut-off and first bay of the side gable has moreover a rich stucco decoration with Neo-Classical and neo-baroque motifs with a hardstone basement, cordon moulding and a worked frieze. The window openings on the second storey are here straight-headed; they are set in a principal order that is crowned by a broken pediment. All other window openings in the gables are arched.

The interior of the house contains on the ground floor a central hall. Adjoining are the principal rooms arranged around it, on the right the stairwell to the attic storey and an adjacent simple service staircase to the second storey. The oak stairs with two landings have carved panels around the stairwell opening and railings with turned wooden balusters and a carved newel post decorated with acanthus leaves. In front of the hall a vestibule. The principal rooms have worked stucco ceilings with moulded and ornamental borders and three worked fireplace mantels in both wood and marble. Door and window frames are provided with architraves. In the doors multiple bosses. The principal rooms have folding doors. To the vestibule a glazed door with side and top lights. The floor structure of the ground floor consists of iron I-beams with barrel vaults of masonry laid between them. The finish in hall and vestibule is of veined white marble. In the rooms wooden floors, various of which are executed as oak parquet. The two left-hand rooms have oak wainscoting with carved work in the panels. The passage to the kitchen has a white-tiled wainscoting with blue meandering tilework borders. The house has several cellars, including a wine cellar. The fanlights of the windows in the main building have leaded glass windows with garland motifs. In the fanlight of the original rear door is a leaded glass window in which the date 1897 is incorporated.

Valuation

The mansion is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of a socio-economic development, namely the implementation of new urban planning structures in the context of the flourishing of the industrial city; it is of importance for the typological development of the manufacturer's dwelling.
