Inleiding

Voormalige AMBACHTSSCHOOL in Eclectische en Rationalistische bouwstijl uit 1880 en 1904. De school is opgericht door de gemeente Tilburg. De voorbouw, in de Eclectische stijl, bestaat uit het herenhuis "Guillaume" uit 1880, dat is gebouwd voor de Tilburgse lakenfabrikant Guillaume Joseph Desiré Pollet (1841-1896). die getrouwd was met Constance Rosalie Marie de Horion de Corby (1843-1902). De school van 1904 ligt op de westkant van het perceel. Het gebouw bestaat uit twee vleugels, die haaks op elkaar staan. Gezamenlijk hebben ze een T-vormige plattegrond, waarvan de as loodrecht op de Spoorlaan ligt. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt de school verhoogd met een bouwlaag. Omschrijving

De drielaagse Ambachtsschool wordt gedekt door een plat dak. De voorbouw is drie traveeën breed en twee diep. De symmetrische voorgevel aan de Spoorlaan is opgezet volgens de kolossale orde met hoekpilasters. Hij heeft een middenrisaliet doorgaand over twee bouwlagen met een hoofdgestel, dat bekroond wordt door een tympaan waarin het wapen van Tilburg. De risaliet bevat op de begane grond twee gekoppelde vensters gescheiden door een smalle penant met op de tweede bouwlaag een loggia met een gietijzeren balustrade. Op de bovenste bouwlaag hebben de muuropeningen een stalen latei en vensters met een twaalfruits verdeling. De elf traveeën brede achtervleugel heeft dezelfde opbouw en afwerking. Het opgaande werk bestaat uit gepleisterde baksteen. De vloerconstructies zijn van hout, ze worden gedragen door stalen moerbalken geplaatst op ojiefvormige hardstenen consoles. In de voorbouw een monumentaal trappenhuis rond een vierkant schalmgat met klimmende gewelfbogen, hardstenen steektrappen en hoekbordessen. In de achterbouw een trappenhuis met steektrappen en bordessen. Beide trappenhuizen hebben een getegelde lambrisering.

Waardering

De voormalige ambachtsschool is van algemeen belang. Het pand is van cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de transformatie van een voormalige villa tot ambachtsschool, om te voldoen aan de toenemende behoefte aan goed opgeleide ambachtslieden in de industriestad. Introduction

The risalit contains on the ground floor two coupled windows separated by a narrow pilaster shaft with on the second storey a loggia with a cast-iron balustrade. The loggia is accessed via double doors with side lights and fanlight. The adjacent bays have on all three storeys two coupled windows separated by a narrow pilaster shaft. The bays in the side facades have on each storey one window. The elongated rear wing has three bays in width and thirteen in length. Pilasters accentuate the bays of the long side facades. Arched wall openings in the lower two storeys with wooden windows with glazing bars and mullions. On the upper storey the wall openings have a steel lintel and windows with a twelve-pane division. The eleven bays wide rear wing has the same structure and finish. The masonry consists of plastered brick. The floor structures are of wood, supported by steel beams placed on ogive-shaped stone consoles. In the front wing a monumental stairwell around a square light-well with climbing barrel vaults, stone step treads and corner landings. In the rear wing a stairwell with step treads and landings. Both staircases have tiled wainscoting.

Valuation

The former craft school is of general importance. The property is of cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, namely the transformation of a former villa into a craft school, to meet the increasing need for well-trained craftsmen in the industrial city. It is also important as a particular example of the typological development of the craft school. From an architectural-historical perspective the object is valuable because of its style, the special use of materials and the ornamentation.
