Inleiding

Haar man was lakenfabrikant Guillaume Joseph Desiré Pollet (1841-1896).

Waardering

De villa is algemeen belang. Introduction

"VILLA CONSTANCE" from 1902, with Art Nouveau features, to a design by Tilburg architect Jan van der Valk. In 1998 in use as a dental practice. The house was built on commission of the widow Constance R.C.M. de Lorion de Corby (1843-1902). Her husband was cloth manufacturer Guillaume Joseph Desiré Pollet (1841-1896). They previously lived in the house "Guillaume" to the west thereof on Spoorlaan 434, which after reorganisation in 1904 became the forecourt of the former municipal Craft School.

The villa stands freely on a rectangular plot and has its front or north facade on the Spoorlaan. At the rear it has a recent extension covered by a flat roof. This part is outside the protection. West of the former municipal Craft and Industrial School, the former villa "Guillaume" two other villas are built in 1897 at Spoorlaan 436 and 438 for family members of her husband. Both in Eclectic style, to a design by architect W.F.J.H. Bouman (Tilburg/Breda).

Description

The villa has mainly two storeys with an attic storey covered by combined hipped roofs. The slopes are covered with natural slate roof tiles in Maastricht bond.

The architecture of the front facade is striking because of the recession of the facade planes both in height and in depth, whereby the central square tower-like three-storey entrance section covered by a flat roof and the veranda with balcony located to the right are the main elements. The tower section has a stone plinth at the front with three frontal steps with a wrought iron balustrade to the sides. The front door frame, executed as a milk maid, has a side light and fanlight with two vertical glazing bars. The door, provided with carved work, contains three lights and panels and in the middle a small ventilation possibility with decorative grille. On the second storey a T-window, below with casement windows and in the fanlight two vertical glazing bars. In the side facade a narrow window. The third storey has both in the front and side facade a T-shaped window with two intermediate stiles. The tower is crowned by four corner pilasters between which a balustrade of wrought Art Nouveau ironwork.

The projecting facade of the left building mass contains at the location of the entrance section a running corner and in the frieze a multicoloured Art Nouveau tile mosaic with respectively the texts 'Villa Constance' and 'Anno 1902'. On the ground floor, three sash windows with in the fanlight two vertical glazing bars. Two of the windows are located in the front facade, the third next to the front door. On the upper floor a window with intermediate stile and two fanlights with vertical glazing bar division. The window in the running corner is blocked up.

The wooden frame in the veranda, originally with garden doors, now has a stone breast wall. In the fanlight there is a standing-glazing bar division. The balcony likewise has a balustrade between pilasters of wrought Art Nouveau ironwork. The corner pilaster at the veranda contains a transverse placed buttress. The frame with two balcony doors is likewise executed as a 'milk maid'. It has a side light and fanlight with two vertical glazing bars. The right side facade has three windows, which correspond with those of the front facade. The left side facade is nearly blind.

In the rear facade there is also a recession of the facade planes both in height and in depth. On the second storey there is a balcony. The facing of the villa consists of whitewashed rendered brick, which at the location of the plinth, frieze and beside the windows is horizontally recessed. The whole is varied by stone sills, stone bases and capping stones and above the wall openings by iron I-profiles, which function as lintels.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance. The property has cultural-historical value as an example of a socio-economic development, namely the construction of richly detailed manufacturer's houses within the densifying urban structure and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the dwelling house. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the style and detailing and as an example of the architect's work. The house is important because of the integrity of its exterior and has ensemble value as part of an urban townscape characterised by structural and visual integrity.
