Introduction

Former VILLA "Joseph" from 1897 in Eclectic style designed by architect W.F.J.H. Bouman (Tilburg/Breda). The semi-detached villa, which was in use as an office in 1998, was built for Tilburg cloth manufacturer Pollet. The neighbouring house to the west called "Desiré" at Spoorlaan 438 was built at the same time in the same style and by the same client and architect.

Description

The villa has two storeys with an attic storey, covered by a mansard roof running all around. The front facade of the villa contains a three-storey tower projection, covered by an octagonal tower spire with a gilt starburst finial. All roofs are covered with slate tiles. The tower has a circular ground plan. The third storey is octagonal. The main entrance to the house is located in the tower.

The glazed round-arched door installed around 1975 is crowned by a tympanum with palmette. The storeys contain narrow round-arched windows. The tower frieze contains the name of the house: "VILLA JOSEPH". To the right of the tower the front facade has a three-sided bay with garden doors in the middle and sash windows on either side. The fanlights have a segmental arch. On the bay a balcony with round-arched balustrade. The balcony is accessed via double balcony doors with round arch in the fanlight. The doors are flanked by narrow sash windows with round arches in the fanlights. To the left of the tower on both storeys a sash window with round arches in the fanlights. The left side facade contains a service entrance in a two-storey bay. The sash windows in the facade all have round arches in the fanlights. At the rear the house has a terrace with balustrade. In the roof panels are zinc roof dormers with cheeks and tympanum crownings. The masonry consists of plastered brick. The stucco work of the round arches above the wall openings is accentuated by carved work. The arches on the pilasters beside the balcony doors are supported by carved capitals. The house stands around on a plinth. The facades have a string course. At the top they are closed by a cornice with frieze. The interior of the villa has a Carrara marble floor in the hallway and wainscoting. The circular hall has a star vault supported by columns and marble wainscoting. The stairwell contains dog-leg stairs with stringers and handrails with turned and carved balusters and newel post. In the house a suite of rooms with sliding doors. The rear room is provided with oak wainscoting and a marble fireplace. Doors with rusticated panels and carved architraves. The house has two separate cellars, one of which is accessible from outside.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance. The property has cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, namely the construction of richly detailed manufacturers' residences within the existing urban structure and is also important as an example of the typological development of the residential house. From an architectural-historical perspective it is important because of its style and detailing and as an example of the architect's work. The house is important because of the integrity of its exterior and interior and has ensemble value as part of a valuable townscape.
