Inleiding
Het Eclecticistische WOON-WINKELPAND dateert uit 1885. Onderdelen van het bedrijfsgedeelte dateren uit 1822, voordat een grote brand in 1880 het geheel grotendeels in de as legde. Het pand herbergde tevens de kaarsenfabriek van M.C.N. Bressers. De oorspronkelijk vrijwel geheel blinde zijgevel aan het Stadhuisplein is rond 1990 voorzien van een reeks nieuwe zesruits vensters. Hierbij werd onder meer de drielaagse indeling van het bedrijfsgedeelte grotendeels teruggebracht tot twee bouwlagen.
Omschrijving
Het tweelaagse pand heeft een V-vormige plattegrond en is vrijwel geheel onderkelderd. De binnenplaats is rond 1990 volgebouwd. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit handgevormde baksteen en op de zadeldaken liggen zwarte Oudhollandse dakpannen. Het representatieve woon- en winkelgedeelte heeft een rijk gedetailleerde gevel met afgeronde hoek. De gevel wordt geleed door middel van natuurstenen pilasters, voorzien van blokken, sleuven en velden. Horizontaal wordt de gevel geleed door natuurstenen lekdorpels en het fries. Onder de ramen van het woon- en winkelgedeelte bevinden zich kelderramen, afgezet met een smeedijzeren hekwerk in Neo-Lodewijk XV stijl. In de afgeronde hoek bevindt zich een dubbele vleugeldeur met bovenlicht, en erboven een T-raam. Rechts hiervan, aan de zijde van het Stadhuisplein, twee rechthoekige etalagevensters waarboven twee T-ramen. De gevel aan de Monumentstraat bevat een etalageruit met daarboven een T-venster. Hierna volgen nog vier T-vensters. Deze vensters en de T-vensters op de verdieping zijn voorzien van een rijke stuclijst met kuiven. Een van de vensters heeft een iets afwijkende roedenverdeling en geen kelderrooster; hier was oorspronkelijk de deur van Monumentstraat 8. De borstwering van de etage is voorzien van rijke ornamentiek. Het fries is voorzien van ruiten met aansluitende velden, de gekorniste kroonlijst rust op voluutconsoles. Het fries op de hoek is voorzien van de naam: "M.C.N. Bressers". Op de nok van het dak staat een overhoeks gemetselde schoorsteen met siermetselwerk. De gevel naast het winkeldeel aan het Stadhuisplein bezit op de begane grond en de etage nog een omlijst zesruits schuifvenster, met smeedijzeren kelderrooster. De gevel, waarin rechte steekankers, maakt dan een knik. Op de begane grond volgen dan drie, en op de etage vier vensters die rond 1990 als exacte kopie in het muurwerk zijn aangebracht. De oorspronkelijke driedeling van de etages bij het fabrieksdeel is hier teruggebracht tot twee bouwlagen. Tenslotte volgt een deel waarbij de drie etages wel behouden bleven, met twee getoogde deuropeningen. Hiertussen één getoogd raam, daarboven twee etages met elk twee van deze kleine getoogde vensters met nieuwe kleine roedenverdeling.
Het gepleisterde fries heeft een eenvoudige profielrand, de gootlijst is eveneens geprofileerd.
Waardering
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van de stad en de typologische ontwikkeling van de stedelijke nijverheidsgebouwen. Architectuurhistorisch is het van belang vanwege de stijl en de ornamentiek, met name het contrast in de gevels tussen representatieve en sobere en ambachtelijke vormen. Beneath the windows of the residential and commercial section are cellar windows, set off with wrought-iron railing in Neo-Louis XV style. In the rounded corner is a double-leaf door with fanlight, and above it a T-window. To the right of this, on the Stadhuisplein side, two rectangular shop windows above which two T-windows. On the ground floor three windows follow, and on the first floor four windows which around 1990 were inserted as exact copies into the masonry. The original three-division of the storeys in the factory section is here reduced to two storeys. Finally follows a section where the three storeys are retained, with two arched door openings. Between these one arched window, above it two storeys each with two of these small arched windows with new small glazing bars.
The plastered frieze has a simple moulded edge, the guttering is likewise moulded.
